p.1 #1 · Best 1st Lens for X-Pro1?

Hi all,

Long time Canon user and was thinking about dabbling in these smaller rangerfinder style Fujifilm cameras. The X-Pro1 looks to be had at an amazing price, and seems like the perfect camera to test the waters of this line.

I was hoping to get some recommendations for a good 1st time lens that will really make this camera shine; a best bang for your buck, if you will, i.e., 50 1.8mm to the Canon. I am primarily looking for something for street photography, candid and portraiture, as well as landscape.

Naturally I want something that will work well with OVF, so I am not familiar with how some of the lenses (specifically zoom will block the OVF and force me to use EVF.

I've been researching how to use the OVF on this style of camera as well as adjusting for the parallax error, but any other tips or advice would be very welcome! In the mean time, I'll be keeping my eyes open in the Buy-Sell forum for available bodies!

Thanks again!

I love my 35 f2 and my 90 f2. The 90 f2 does not work with the OVF. It will work on the X-Pro 2. If you use the OVF, the frame lines are very small.

18-55mm works great with both the OVF and EVF, has great optics, useful OIS, and a small/light yet solid build

@millsart Oooh, the OIS is pretty tempting, but how big is that 18-55?

@brian_f2.8 sorry if this is obvious, but can you explain why the 90 f2 would work with the OVF on the X-Pro2 but not the X-Pro1?

35mm 1.4 or F2 or the 27mm 2.8. Love those two lenses on my X-Pro1. Looking back at files between the X-Pro 1, X-T1 and X-T2. I like the files from the X-Pro1 best... I wish I could move the sensor from the X-Pro1 into the X-T2 body.

18-55 is quite small, slightly longer than the 35mm f1.4

Blocks less of the OVF than quite a few of the prime lenses in fact

Just a good quality, relatively low priced lens, that comes in handy for a lot of shooting trips

I second the 35 f/2 AND its $100 just about everywhere for Black Friday 2016!

EDIT: it's $100 off haha, sorry! Not $100

Thanks for the recommendations so far guys. I am learning toward the 35mm f/2.

I was also looking at the 16-55mm 2.8, but as mentioned, I am unfamiliar with how this will affect the OVF. Eventually I imagine I'd get lenses that inhibit the OVF, but I'd definitely want something that will allow me to use and get familiar with the OVF.

You mentioned the 50mm Canon. I started my Fuji venture with the 35/2 and it's really a great lens. The 1.4 is a slightly nicer rendering but I've been super pleased with the f2 plus you get the WR.

At the price you can get it now, I think it's a killer deal.

In my view, the XPro2 (which I use) is most likely for people who primarily shoot primes in the 16-90mm range or so, and mostly idea for perhaps around 20-60mm. If you enjoy shooting with lenses that provide similar angle of view coverage on your Canon system (which I also use), simply get a Fujifilm prime that comes close.

The 35mm f/1.4 is a great little lens at a reasonable cost, and gives coverage equivalent to just a bit longer than 50mm on full frame. If you want wider with the f/1.4 aperture, the 23mm is a good bet, though it is larger and intrudes into the image a bit with the XPro2 optical viewfinder. There are now smaller f/2 versions of both lenses, too.

It was explained to me a while ago but I forgot the details. I had a 90mm on a X-Pro 2 at B&H, the OVF worked fine. Also the X-Pro 1 is 4/5 years old. Older technology and when it first came out, there were only 3/4 lenses. The 90mm will work just fine with the EVF just not the OVF. Sorry I can't give any more specifics.

One more vote for the 35mm f/2 WR.

On a X-Pro1 I recomment it over the older f/1.4 version. On newer cameras the difference in AF of both lenses is negligible, but on a X-Pro1 the improved AF of the 35/2 will be very, very noticable: when the contrast AF starts hunting, the back and forth AF movement will be much faster on the newer lens making this a lot less frustrating.

Also in technical terms the f/2 version is superior in practically every regard.

For a zoom, I think you can't go wrong with the 18-55mm OIS. But consider also the the 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS. I never used one, but the reporst say it's just slighly less impressive than the mid-range 18-55mm and it even has have some advantages: it's cheaper, lighter and goes to 16mm.

Lots of recommendations for the 35mm and 18-55 OIS. It's definitely hard to beat a prime.

Does anyone have any experience with the 16-55 2.8 or the 10-24 4? Will these lenses interfere with the OVF? I wish Fuji had some kind of documentation about this lol

Hands down one of my favorite lenses ever is the 17-40 4L. It never let me down and is always sharp and contrasty.

The 16-55 is fairly large and does block part of the OVF, great lens though, provided a fast zoom meets your needs. Personally, I found the 18-55 to be less of a compromise overall. Its 28mm equiv instead of 24mm equiv on the wide end, so you do give up a little FoV but not much. The 18-55 is a f2.8-f4 variable aperture instead of a constant f2.8, but on the wide end they are the same, and on the long end, its just 1 stop. You gain a WR build with the 16-55, but given the Xpro1 isn't sealed, its not like your going to be out shooting in the rain with it anyways. You also have OIS on the 18-55 and no OIS on the 16-55.

16-55 blocks more of the OVF as well, but honestly, even a lens that large doesn't really ruin the OVF experience, at least in my eyes. I've been shooting RF style cameras for years and maybe just am used to some OVF blockage. It was given par for course with many of the lens on my Leica M9, and you just learn to look past it.

For me, OVF frame blockage isn't the least bit of a factor and I continue to enjoy "larger" lenses like the 16/1.4, 23/1.4 and 56/1.2 paired with the OVF, though I use the EVF more overall, just due to preference.

OVF is fun in certain situations, but otherwise, I prefer to see the accurate framing and judge focus.

Last but not least, the 10-24 is a great lens, very sharp, little larger in size but actually quite light, and with a handy OIS system too. Even can take filters. Isn't going to work with the OVF with regards to actual framing past about 16mm setting though. The framelines just can't show you anything larger than about 24mm equiv FoV.

It does still work, and allows you to shoot, but you just need to mentality picture the larger FoV and frame accordingly, or switch to the EVF mode for that lens. Again, I don't find it a huge issue, because on most true RF cameras you needed an external OVF to see the framing.

Having owned both, I'll agree that on paper, the f2 version does everything "better". Faster, silent AF, smaller size (though I will say it looks a little silly), weather resistant build, better detents on the aperture ring etc.

Only area where I didn't enjoy it more was the actual images. The f1.4 version just renders in a more pleasing way, even at the same apertures. Just is a bit smoother and creamier, with a sharp, yet not clinically sharp way of rendering the subject. A very "classic' 50mm equiv type of look which I really preferred.

The f2 version was enjoy for its performance on the camera, but when I would review the images later I always picked out the 1.4 version shots.

I think one should probably try both, pick up a used f1.4 version and a new f2 WR ($299 is a great deal), resell the f1.4 for what you paid, or return the f2 version to the store. Both are great lens but I think people will gravitate to one or the other.

For some people the overall features sways them one way, for others (like myself), it comes down to the look of the images above all else.

Thanks Millsart for the really in depth opinion! I've decided to go with the 18-55 to play around and then invest in some higher quality primes if it tickles my fancy.

Thanks so much again everyone!

In general I also recommend the 18-55, especially after using it in a particular situation for a week a couple years back. It is a very nice lens, and much more than a typical "kit lens."

However, to generalize a bit, I feel that most people who are zoom-centric are probably not the ideal candidates for the XPro2. In my view, the XPro2 is at its best when working with primes and taking advantage of the OVF.

It is true that the camera also works will with its EVF. (It is also true that I have a 50-140mm zoom that I sometimes use on mine!) But for a user who goes straight to a zoom lens as a starting point and perhaps only lens, I really think that the EVF-only XT2 is a better option.

You have hit on one of the several reasons why the combination of OVF and zoom (and the large) lenses is not a good one in general. Even some of the standard primes (like the 23mm f/1.4) intrude into the viewing area of the OVF. In fact, my small 35mm f/1.4 does with its hood attached. The larger lenses — the zooms, the large aperture primes, the longer primes — all have this issue.

You can switch to the EVF in those cases, but if such lenses are likely to be your only or your main lenses, the EVF-only XT1 or XT2 are almost certainly a better bet. (I've used both EFV-only and EVF/OVF hybrid Fujifilm cameras, with lenses ranging from the small 35mm f/2 up tot he 50-140mm zoom.)

- - -

Speaking a bit more for how I actually use this kind of camera, in my case the XPro2... The Fujifilm system is one half of my photographic "arsenal," with a full frame DSLR system being the other half. The Fujifilm system is my primary system for travel and street photography. For this, I value small system size and the ability to work quickly and unobtrusively. I can carry my entire system — typically the XPro2 with either 35mm or 23mm installed, plus the uninstalled lens and the 14mm and possibly a 60mm or a longer zoom — in a smallish messenger bag that a) fits under the seat on planes, b) is light and easy to carry on the street, and c) has room left over for my tiny laptop and other stuff.

I like the OVF for much of this kind of shooting for the reason you may have heard of — it shows a larger area that the picture are in the viewfinder, there is not blackout at the time of exposure, and so forth. I like primes for most of this work with this camera because they are quick and fast and make me less visually obvious as a serious photographer while working. If that is your approach, the OVF system is really wonderful.

For me, the use of lenses like my 50-140mm (and, in the future, possibly the 15-55) is more of an occasional thing. While my primary use remains the small prime sort of shooting, the XPro2 does let me switch to the larger zooms and the EVF and work effectively. But it is perhaps telling that I always switch to the EVF when I do this. Based on this and on using an EVF-only Fujifilm camera for 3 1/2 years before the current camera, I'm am certain that if I were primarily shooting zoom lenses I would prefer the excellent XT2 (or XT1) since they are much better adapted to that kind of shooting.

Basically, if you are looking for a DSLR replacement in smaller package, I don't think the XPro2/1 bodies are likely to be your best bet.

Thanks, Dan! You've provided a lot of insight. All the reasons you listed are what makes me want to look into the rangefinder style camera. I don't plan on giving up my Canon, as it suits its purposes, but for certain situations, it is obtrusive and generally a pain to carry; even if I were to only carry 2 or 3 lenses.

I'm also really looking forward to the OVF precisely because of the advantages it can offer during composition and framing. The 18-55 sounds pretty sweet to toy around with and I'll also be getting 35mm as well. Really looking forward to this!
