I find this thread very interesting. One conclusion I draw is that there is a law of diminishing returns in regard to processing power and RAM.

Earlier I posted this:

52 Seconds

New Dell Dimension 4700
CPU: 3 Gig P4
1 Gig RAM
160 Gig SATA Harddrive
Photoshop 7

The G5 with dual processors and 4 times as much RAM isn't even twice as fast, but it must have cost a lot more money.

My new Dell cost $1200 Canadian. What is a G5 with that much ram worth?

The time on my system is 1-2 seconds. The bar doesn't even show.

There's no way it should be that fast compared to other machines. What am I doing wrong?

I tested this on my laptop with the following configuration:
Photoshop CS
Model: HP/Compaq nc6000
Processor: 1.4MHz Pentium M (Centrino)
Memory: 768MB
Windows XP Pro

Regards, Jim

Between 29 and 30 seconds, so I'll say 29.5 seconds.

WinXP Pro

You're not clicking on the "Best" Radio Button (the second one down).

im really surprised at this. i have done exactly as described and im getting around 3 seconds each time. 2.5 -3.5 seconds ballpark.

just as surprising is my list of running applications. 10 bit torrents. winamp. aim. etc. i had premiere working when i got the 3.5s. wacom tablet.. and so on.

custom built pc around 2 years old.

ahhh, riha you are correct. your first question nailed my inaccuracy on the nose. i had ps lying above the thread window with directions on what to do and it covered up that very important step lol.

i will retry this the CORRECT way

4 MINUTES, 43 SECONDS.

Old dell 7500 Inspiron laptop
PIII, 500 mHZ
500 mb RAM
Wn XP

Knew it was way bad, but did not know how bad. I love you guys! This just gave me enough ammunition with my wife to justify joining the 21st century. Any upgrade will seem wonderful to me.

75 secs,
AMD Athlon XP 2800+
1GB 3200 RAM
ATI Radion 9800Pro
74GB Raptor

it's fun, but I think it's not quite a "photoshop speed" test, because the result almost purely depends on the speed of the processor(s) alone. It does not stress the memory capacity/speed or the HD access/reading/seektime speed at all.
