Congratulations to chez for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 10 votes - View Previous Winners

Three different views of Mt. Kidd in the Canadian Rockies on 3 different trips. I love going back to places where I've photographed before to get different views of the same area. The lighting changes, the atmosphere changes and your vision changes with each visit. These three images were taken during three different trips to the Rockies. All were taken in the morning, but each has it's own character.

What's your favourite from this set. I have mine...but it is somewhat jaded as the experience taking the photo influences my preferences.

Harry

All are outstanding in their own way. But when slowly scrolling through the sudden green that appeared in the third blew me away!

That's a tough choice, but if you force me to pick, I'd go with #1.
The fold is impressive!

1 is my favorite, but agree, the green really makes number 3. It would be my close #2. The blue in the sky feels off on my computer for the second

I really, really like your second image! I love the mood and the fact you can't see the highway.

It's been a few years since I've last photographed at this location (pre-floods) and I guess I really need to get back there.

What's my favorite? #2. However, #1 and #3 are also superb images! Dave

#1 and 2 are superb and wall hangers. I actually find shadows to HDRishh in #3. But that could be just me

Hi Harry,

I like #2 the most followed by #1. In #3, if you could add some contrast perhaps so it doesn't feel like a washed out HDR, I think it would improve it immensely.

Love all of these, but number 3 rattles my chimes the loudest.

That is just a first impression though, and with more study I might change my mind. They are all that good!

Chez

Middle ground left side in 1 looks out of focus.
3 has spots in sky. Tree poking into the sky and road on the right side are problems in my opinion which lead to compositional questions in terms of camera position and photo balance that may not be able to be overcome.

I also would have considered the dynamics in the sky and green color in 3 more important than the foreground grasses or most of the peak reflection. Just a thought. Middle ground again looks out of focus or not sharp for some reason.

The near /far in these photos exhibits what used to be avoided by some not all 4x5 photographers in the past. The 4x5 technique was to focus on something near and something far only. Eliminating any middle ground. This was very easy to do with tilt and led to a particular look. With no middle ground to worry about an almost wide open aperture could be used. Compositionally this also took away any need to unify foreground and background and several other composition questions.

Your photos do have a middle ground that requires important consideration in my opinion.

These photos seem to be an idea that you are still working on.

Awesome captures , Harry! Couldn't decide between No. 1 and 2; they are both equally exquisite!

First two are simply awesome. For the 3rd, the wide angle distortion hurts the image IMHO.

I fall in line with many here; #1 is my fave. I really like number three but am not a fan of HDR stuff and maybe that's what gives me pause. Having said that, they are all pretty damn wonderful.

Nice pictures - its always nice to see someone skilled come to my backyard and show me what I am missing.

I like 2 best because I don't like the road, but I think you have pushed the trees too much in having color. And I think adding more black would improve.

Good shooting - Scott

Thanks all for the feedback.

Little story behind the 1st image. It was taken a few years ago in mid September. I got up quite early as there was a heavy fog and I had about an hour drive to this spot. The roads were very slippery as the temperature was hovering around freezing and the fog was getting icy. Came around a corner and this big hulk of an animal appeared from the thick fog. Slammed on the brakes, skidded all over and just missed the animal. Turns out it was a big moose, just slowly wandering down the road. It looked at me, I had to go around it to continue down the road.

When I got to this location, it was just starting to turn light, but was heavy in fog. As the sun came over the mountain tops, the fog started to quickly disappear revealing the lake. I ran down to the shore, setup my camera and waited for some nice light. Just as I was about to take a shot, a beaver swims through the pond and ruins the reflection. I throw a rock into the pond to scare the beaver and as things calm down again...here comes that beaver again. This went on for about 10 minutes until the beaver decided to do something else.

Anyways, I love meeting up with wildlife when out taking landscapes. It just adds to the great experience out in the wilderness.
