Congratulations to finnianp for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 14 votes - View Previous Winners

Earlier this month I took a trip out to the Grand Canyon with the family. After two nights of failed sunsets, I was rewarded with a big lightning storm moving through. From the view point, I had almost 180 degrees of lightning strikes. It was a new moon, so the canyon was completely black except for the brief instants when lightning would illuminate the features. I struggled to find the right settings and was getting nervous as the storm came closer, but I think this really captures the feeling of being there.

Comments and critique welcome!

When I saw this, I threw away my book of adjectives. Went to your Web site, viewed the other work you've done in B&W, the subjects you chose and how you treated them, and returned to this. No lucky accident here; and the adjectives still don't measure up to it. The effect on you at the time you were shooting must have been indescribable.

I only wish it was presented larger (the maximum size has increased recently).

I hope no one "suggests" you bring out details in the darker areas…

Wonderful. Agree with blushaedows on liking the blacks.

A B&W photograph with blacks and whites, how novel. Very nicely done Patrick, this is wonderful, although I would remove the ghost line from top of rocks. That must of been pretty cool watching this storm progress from the rim. You should cross post this to the B&W forum also. Im voting for this one.

Very captivating photograph. BW conversion retains full scale of black and white tones not just for the ground but for the sky as well! Kind of a hamburger and a delicious one indeed.

Great job, love the layers of darkness and all the power of the storm.

This is one of those vote first comment second captures. It is so well composed and captured you have to look twice to be sure its not a painting! The subtle details are superb! I only with you would post this larger. Bravo!

Thanks everyone! If I remember tonight, I'll get a color version for you Grav, but I don't think the color added much.

Here is a bigger version for those who requested:

B&W was exactly the right choice here. I've been there under similar conditions sans camera

As an Arizonan, ever so often I'll wake up and think, "Hell, I've got to go see the Canyon." Doesn't matter how many times I've been there or how many different places I've viewed it from - never the same. I always think "How small I am, but oh, so grateful to be a part of this awesome and deadly earth."

Superb photo and treatment.

Robert

Do try to go at times hoping to miss the hordes that have their pix snapped standing in front of the abyss. Like they forget to look over and worship the awe.
