No one should ever photograph on live tracks. It is very dangerous and many people have been killed. Please, everyone keep in mind how irresponsible this is and lets keep everyone safe.
Please educate yourself. Here is a place to start:
1. He is not on the tracks!
2. The rails that show are so out of focus I don't know how anyone can presume to tell if they are rusty or not
3. I understand the the current fad is to have nothing but the prime subject in focus but you said the little guy likes trains and it looks like there might be a train on a bridge in the background of one picture but the background is so out of focus it is hard to tell. If he is a train guy, why not show the train too? It's no crime to stop a lens down a bit. Even an expensive lens
50 years ago my little guy wanted to walk on train tracks - so I let him. Big Deal!

Alan,
I did have a couple pictures up of him walking on a section but took them down. The rails weren't completely rusted but the section we were at isn't active anymore but do shunt cars from time to time. There weren't any trains in town at the time we were out there anyway but I can see other's concern.
There's a town a couple hours away that has static displays of engines and cars so I'll get some more later on there and stop down. The Otus begs for wide open and is quite addicting though!
What a dapper looking young gentleman. You got some great images. Really like image 3 with 1 a close second. He looks really happy, and it shows in your images. Hope the next shoot with the engines and cars is as successful as this one.
Glad the FM nanny state has sufficiently excoriated you for taking pictures near railroad tracks. When I think of some of my own ways to judge you for your negligent parenting and all the horrible life lessons you are passing on to your impressionable two-year old, I'll definitely post them. Until then, I'll say that these are nice pictures, and impressive that you were able to shoot them using a dSLR and MF lens. I have a hard time shooting my toddler on an RF with manual focus, and am pretty sure I would never get an in-focus shot if I was using a dSLR.
