ok, cause I got a line one locally, seller is willing to provide receipts as he wasn't aware of the recall. Good price; considering it's in Canadian pesos
I understand the size preference I had a 55 before I got the planar and then sold it. I got another new one six months ago for a smaller package and sold it. The 50 1.4 is as good a lens if if not the best lens made for Sony FF.
I was fortunate to get a superb 35 1.4 Distagon last week so even though I like the 24-70GM having the 35, 50 & 85GM/90 macro and 100STF I feel pretty darn good.
The versatility of the 24-70GM is nice and I get very good images from it but I believe it is the weakest of the GM's for sure. I am not anti zoom at all either I love the 12-24, 16-35GM and 70-200GM/100-400GM's but when you have the time to switch lenses nothing is going to touch the 35, 50 & 85.
I just picked up the 50mm 1.4 and the Distagon 35. The Distagon comes tomorrow and I'm going to do my best to try to figure out if it's a good copy or not (I've never tested a lens for decentering before). I was on the fence about the Distagon 35 or the G Master 16-35. With the 50 1.4 I can just back up a bit (I use the 1.4 for low light more than the DOF) when I have the space to do so. I'm still second guessing whether I should have gotten the G Master 16-35, though.
I took my sony a9 and 50 1.4 to the ski slope today and was let down. It was -15 c(5 f). I had I had been out for a couple of hours and when I pickd up the camera there was something wrong with the AF. It was completely dead! Manual focus(bu wire) didn't work either. When I took the camera inside, AF started to wake up slowly. Battery was 87% and menues etc worked perfectly. Focusing also worked perfect on a Batis 25.

SO, If you had the opportunity to buy one that hasn't been returned for the recall, at a good price, would you?
I already have one that was purchased new and it's within the serial number range for recall, but there's nothing in the lens. Some specs of dust, sure, but no fogging. I figure I'm getting extra warranty with the unit and I can send it in sometime in 2019 for a freshen up of sorts.

I took mine out in about -15C -10C several weeks ago, also spent about 2 hours in the cold, and after that the camera (A7RII) with the 50 1.4 stuttered for couple of days. There was a slight delay after turning the camera on and off. So I decided that -5C is the total min temperature I would be bringing it out. I would stick to this rule with any mirrorless Sony camera I had, personally.

In my case, the camera worked flawless. I'm even surprised the battery didn't seem to be affected by the low temperature.
hi guys, i want to use this lens on an a7r3 but recall there was some discussion about bokeh being affected depending on if the electronic or mechanical shutter was used or if ecfs was on or something on the a9. am i over worrying?? is there anything i need to know about using this lens on the a7r3?
Finally got my exchange Sony Zeiss 50mm ZA because of the recall, but the lens looks a little bit decentered to my eyes. What do you think? acceptable for a f1.4 prime lens in this price category?
Especially picture 1915 (look at the street) and 1919 are a little bit softer than the other ones?
No sharpening in post

The first one was definitely more even in all 4 corners than this one but had the "fogging" problem (small white dots on one of rear elements). My dealer is in contact with Sony about the decentering of the exchange lens, but i fear that Sony will claim that this degree is acceptable. It is a little bit frustrating to wait 2 month for the exchange lens and then the lens is again not 100% perfect. The lens ist not a 200$ cheap 50mm 🙄

Wow, two months!
I wonder if they had to replace an entire rear element group and that caused the issue for your repaired lens. Honestly though, it seems well centered to me...meaning, it's not noticeably decentered. (tilted)
Did you notice it in real world images like landscapes at wider apertures?
My lens was not repaired, Sony sent me a new one because they said that it will not be possible to change the rear lens unit (the 50mm ZA is made out of two changeable Lens Units) in the next 6 month because of a shortage in spare parts. It took them 2 month to organize a new one from a none effected batch. Roger from lensrentals published an article about the internals of the 35mm ZA (the 50mm ZA is very similar in construction), his conclusion was that it is very difficult to correct a tilted/decentered lens element because of the construction out of only 2 adjustable "lens units". Maybe the decentering in my copy is just normal copy to copy variation. But for that huge amount of money I wand a perfectly centered copy without any flaws....

I see. It's an entirely difference lens. If you are not happy with the new copy, let them know and see what they say. It's worth a try.

That's interesting. They've had mine for a month now and when I check the status online, it says "awaiting parts". I guess I should followup to see what's happening so that I hopefully get a new one, rather than having to wait six months for a repair.
Quite frankly I'd prefer a new one, since Lens Rentals' testing found that the copy variation isn't too bad on this lens -- so we at least have some stats on the quality of the factory assembly, whereas we don't have stats on how good or poor of a job Precision does when repairing these lenses...
At any rate, this type of thing is why I have a strong preference for buying Zeiss lenses over Sony lenses, whenever possible...(I'd previously had a miserable Sony service experience with a 35/1.4).
