finally just wrapped up a call and received an email with instructions to send to their repair facility (at my expense) for them to 'clean and review' the lens and make any fixes.
honestly, i'm not sure i'm going to even send it in....i don't notice anything (i purchased it 7/30/16) and used it regularly and never noticed anything.
and i could not get an answer from the phone clerks (wasn't expecting to) whether this was something that could get worse or if i don't notice it now, then i won't have an issue.
I’m dreading having to deal with Sony service. Last time I tried them, I sent in a 35/1.4 that was exceptionally bad, under warranty repair. It disappeared into a void at Precision for four months, and I had to reach out to a Sony executive on Linkedin, out of desperation, to get the matter resolved.
My lens seems fine, but if I don’t send it in, I worry about whether the issue crops up in the future (past the recall period) or whether it’ll kill the resale value of the lens. (Would you buy one that was recalled, once the recall period has expired, but that was never sent in? At least, without expecting a meaningful discount?)
The one issue I see is if it’s fogging that means moisture so eventually it could get to A fungus issue. Also if your in air conditioning stepping out to high humidity it may take a longer time for it to clear.
I bought this lens yesterday and wanted to try it out even though the weather has been really bad lately. This was an unplanned ten minute photo shoot with my daughter, all hand held, some with fill flash, some with natural light. All are wide open.
Did you end up sending in your lens? I did the same thing, spent an hour in the phone and now have a repair order which I need to send it. I notice no issues with photos at all but if I shine a light though the rear of the lens I see many tiny spots on one of the glass elements. So even though their is no issue with photos yet I have to assume it could get worse so may be worth the price to send it in now. Just curious what others are doing.

Mine also has the spots, so I'm definitely going to send it in. Though I'll probably wait till after Christmas. I don't generally do a lot of shooting between January to March (being in Canada) so that'll probably be a good time...
I'll be very curious to hear how quick the turnaround times are for the servicing.
From Sony:
"Symptoms
Fogging, visible as small dots, may occur inside the lens.
Image quality may be affected due to a decrease in contrast or resolution."
Mine is just outside of the affected range so I hope their indications of range are correct, because I'd be out of luck if it gets spots
Sent mine in on November 12, finally received return shipping notice this past Friday (November 24). A part was backordered (an optical block) and had to await shipment from Japan. It was out of warranty by just a few days, but they waived the repair fee, I think due in part to my Pro Support membership (phew). Although it's taken a while, Pro Support provided a loaner lens, which helped tremendously. Looking forward to having mine back!

What the hell?? This lens is on my radar... hopefully his is resolved shortly.
By the time a manufacturer acknowledges a problem and implements a recall, they've already fixed the problem for new lenses coming off the manufacturing line. Bonus: This is one of Sony's (precious few) low manufacturing variance products, so you can almost assume a new lens purchase will be a keeper (almost...).
I just got one of these from the buy/sell forum for $1164 (total investment).
purchased 6/9/17, usa model, I have the warranty card and receipt, obviously not my name/address on it, but hey.
I discovered the recall after I paid him.
I inquired. he said it was in the effected range but didn't see any issues, naturally.
so he shipped it.
received the lens. this is my first sony lens. I'm a nikon guy. just getting started with sony.
flashlight test, fail. tons of dots on an inner element.
will sony permit me to get this fixed under warranty?
any clue how long it will take?

Not sure how Sony will handle this in your case. Are you a Pro Support member?
At any rate, it took them about 2.5 weeks to fix mine under warranty. (I'm a pro support member.)

thx for the reply
I am not pro at this time. I just got the lens this week, camera today.
I set up an RMA on the phone with sony in germany. very thorough, wow.
now, they are expecting me to send in the original receipt. so that may be an issue.
I am nikon pro, it's free but tough to get in.
If I qualify for sony pro (which I may after a couple weeks) I will probably sign up. I think it's $100-200 annually?
so maybe I'll wait to send it in.
he said 7-10 days for inspection and cleaning.
I don't know if a cleaning is what I'm looking for. that won't solve anything.

this has the potential to be the best 50mm prime on the market, I'm talking canon/nikon/sony...
when factoring in:
reasonable cost (<$2000 and this is only $1399 new right now)
bokeh (looks great)
character (really unique artsy looking)
sharpness at f1.4 (can't believe the sample I am seeing, wide open)
AF (from my research, seems good enough for the eye AF tech)
I am going to play around with it before sending it in for "fixin".
haven't taken one pic yet!

let me know what you find out. i also bought this lens used here but before the recall. and the service e-mail says a proof of purchase is required, but maybe not really needed since it is a service for a recall?
