Hey Charles
First of all I'm really enjoying your photos a lot - keep them coming!
This thread really is guilty for costing me quite some more money i'm afraid.
Anyway - did you do something in PP with these last pics -at least the second one seems quite
natural in the way there is this slight chromatic aberration in this breaking wave. So I guess it would be relatively easy to get rid of it in PP.
Anyway - the pictures do show again what this lense is capable of - also like the sharpness of the skyline in the background of the fourth photo.
And the für of the cute doggy has this wonderful transition from sharpness to blur and great color to it!
As I said already - you are all a bit guilty for me to spend the money on this thing rather sooner than later...

Forgot to say - last one is another great sample for the details this thing can scratch out of the Australian nature!

Thank you very much Andreas I do appreciate the comments.

I just noticed the chromatic aberration in the wave, I have reposted the shot without.
The dog is Archie, a Groodle, giant poodle crossed with a golden retriever. I found him at the pound about 6 years ago and he his more like a person

Thanks again

Owing X-T2, but spending time on the beach with D810...is 105mm F1.4, that makes you to walk around with that much load, or D810, or both?...

There is a unique look with the D810 and 105/1.4. I was testing the AF continuous to see how it would perform, particularly with shots at f/1.4 and 64 ISO. Truth is the D810 with 105/1.4 is well balanced so it is not really an issue.

Just a kudos to everyone sharing images with this lens.

I don't shoot Nikon any longer but I still enjoy talent, no matter the system. Well done all

Thank you
No regrets. Weight/size has always been important for me, but Sony is really no different in size with fast lenses now compared with DSLR's. I am equally comfortable with OVF and EVF. Truth is both mirrorless and dslr's are both excellent, and now in particular with many used D750 and D810 available in Australia. The IQ from most recent models are excellent, and really comes down to the skill of the photographer and lighting.

I don't know the pricing in other countries, but in Australia Sony have become very expensive. The RX1rII is about 4,500 AUD. I had the RX1 and RX1r but the price was then 2,300, almost half which made for a great to go camera. I was about to add to my Sony fast lenses for portraits/events both the FE 50/1.4 and GM 70-200 but pricing for both were about 7K and larger in size than the dslr equivalents.

Now I am also loving the Fuji XT2 system which is also amazing and great to go camera system. Having both the Nikon and Fuji is what makes it really work for me

Hey Charles - another great set of pictures from the beach.
Well - here we have the east-german winter now and it is kind of grey and chilly, no snow yet though.
Really, your photos make me want to go to down under soon again. Was there only once - but it was an amazing journey in November 2012. Had been down on the Great Ocean Road, then Melbourne, where I was visiting the Melbourne Cup as well, then went up to Queensland for a 3 days sailing trip on the former Australia One. Up then to the Atherton Table lands and watching the total eclipse there, then Daintree. Took the plane from Cairns to Alice Springs after that and headed to Uluru and the Olgas, then had some time in the eastern McDonnell Ranges. In the end I went to Sidney for 3 last days there. Man was I filled up with new experiences. It was a once in a lifetime trip.
( though I had an all around the world ticket and took another flight to Hawaii from there - it was wonderful for relaxation and some more personal discoveries).
Only disadvantage back then was the meager exchange rate for Euro/Austalian $ then.
I'm really looking for the next big opportunity to make a big trip again to Australia, even though there are some more great destinations around the world I guess.
But i loved the many faces that this continent can offer to the open eye.

So happy Xmas season to you and the family on the summery coast of Queensland.

Hey jtgray

These two portraits are absolutely stunning.
They are in a great way uber realistic - the color and texture of their skin and the sharpness -
It is almost as if they would be able to come to life, perhaps showing a twinkling in their eye in the
very next moment.
And the way you used the natural light makes up for it I guess.
( In the end it is still the photographers skill and experience which enables him/her to take pictures
like those, even though these new glass plays an important role as well).

Another wonderful portrait from you here Elijah !
It has some kind of dreaminess to it which plays in a great way with the sharpness.
The light makes me almost feel the gentle breeze and the salty air ( I suppose it was? )

The quality of the lens has to do something with the way you can use the distance to make the shot work I guess,
In a way where the whole scenery plays so gently with the main subject.
It seems that getting results like you and some others here do makes photography an even greater enjoyment in a way ( when you have even more confidence in the process of creating the picture in advance in your mind I mean).

Thank you very much Andreas for the kind words You have seen more of Australia than many Australians, and so many amazing places. Most tourists when they arrive here are amazed the distances and it is not easy to see everything in a quick trip

Australia is a very difficult country to take photos as 80% of the time you have very harsh lighting both for portraits and landscapes. It is very beautiful in its rugged ways, and can very harsh.

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year to you and your family

I've enjoyed looking through all the posts on this lens (and noting the frequent pairing with a D810) and was hoping for some advice please?
It's Xmas, it's been a good year at work and I'm enjoying my photography. I'm getting myself a present and it was going to be the 105 1.4. The plan was to use it for indoor basketball (I shoot photos for my sons team, nothing serious for the team, but I like to get as good photos as possible). I have the 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 VRII 2.8, but lighting in some of gyms is shocking, so I've been using the 85 1.8G for the last few games and it's turned out quite well - focus is fast enough. I have a D750 and often with the 2.8 lenses I've got the iso up around 8000 to get a ss of 800-1000. So I thought if the 85mm 1.8G is working OK, then the 105 1.4 would be better still for getting some of those shots under the rings that really shows off the sweat and effort! I'm not planning on shooting at 1.4, maybe 1.8 to give myself a little foucs plane leeway... But then when I saw the price in Australia ($3,300) I realised that's the price of a new D810...and besides the basketball I enjoy general photography and starting thinking would a D810 make a better present?! Yes it's FPS is a bit slower than the D750 and the low light may not be quite as good but for all the other general photography it is probably better...What do you think? D810 or 105 1.4? Any wise words for me please….?

I rented this lens this past week, really impressed although the focus speed seems quite slow to me.
