Ok, SUPER MINI review after only taking about 20 shots around the crib.
I am beyond amazed of the capabilities of this gem. Seriously, every shot is a WOW shot.
I am afraid the secret is out and my 58G has to sign divorce papers.
I admit 100%, the 105E is my go to lens for portraiture from now on, as long as I have the space.
Virtually no CA, sharp as heck, OOF elements are amazing.
Focus speed? To my surprise, it's faster than I thought it would be (based on reviews)
Handling, feel, look, etc is beyond my expectation!
I will post more [real bokehlicious] shots tonight. No more bricks

Wowser! Besides a little pincushion distortion, this lens is damn near perfect. It's seriously sharp across the whole frame wide open.
I think you might notice "distortion" because I wasn't perfectly framed parallel and flat in relationship to the sensor when I shot the bricks.
It was a super quick shot.
A shot at f/5.6 at infinity would be wonderful if anyone gets the chance. Curious how this sharpens up from 1.4 -> 5.6. In one flickr group showing an religious figurine, it wasn't as huge as I expected but was on a D4 (if I recall).
WOW! Look at that bokeh! Those OOF elements are so creamy... Man I love this lens!
Yeah Elijah, that's exactly why I took pictures of the stars to see how sharp they would be at the corners. You photographed a brick wall which is not as good as photographing the stars but it does the job right? On my star shot, I Saul just a hint of distortion at the extreme edges. This lens won't get rid of all of that by F2 .8 I'm sure.

Never heard this before but seen lots of wall shots. How can you tell in the star shots? The stars look a little OOF to me but maybe I don't know what I am looking for.

Did I read that correctly? You are going to sell the 58mm for a second time?

My star shot test was basically to see how bad the stars look like sea gulls in the corners of the frame. And this is in the extreme corner, all the way to the corner, and the stars are not distorted all that bad. Now this test does not check for barrel distortion but I am using it to see what aperture I can get away with when photographing the night sky. Some lenses I have to stop down to F/4 to make some of the star distortion go away. However with this new 105, they are nearly pinpoint at the corners at f/1.4 which makes me very happy.
As you can see in this sample, this is the upper left extreme corner of the sensor image from the lens being wide-open .... Above that corner shot is the entire full image.

Again? You'd be divorced twice with this lens already
Send a PM to ageless. He said that 58G is next on his to-buy list
I'm not getting the 58 now, the 105 will be next on my list, unless the Tamron 115 looks about as good and is cheaper, or unless Nikon or someone brings out a 135 in the next year.

Actually, it's a fair comparison. ISO has nothing to do with BG blur... all it does is add noise. Plus, the Df and D4 have the same sensor. Are you really in this much state of disbelief that a 105 1.4 can hang with a 200 f/2? I understand some people still believe the earth is flat, but man..wake up! it's 2016.. this is cutting edge technology right here. FASTEST 105 in production. Just amazing piece of glass. Don't fight it man, go with the flow and enjoy what we got.
Actually it's not, the picture looks like garbage period, the color, the noise, the softness, etc. All settings should be identical. You don't see pro's doing comparisons with totally different settings and background, for good reason.

Send me your 200 f/2 and I'll do a side-by side. I don't have that lens anymore, so I just picked up the most similar shots I could find.
But I will tell you this again.. This 105 1.4E is AMAZING!! Sooo happy I sold my 200 f/2.
You guys need to quit flipping out. I personally think the 105 1.4E is amazing also. I'm hanging onto my 200 F/2 though because sometimes I will want that extra compression. I will get this lens or something like it in the next year though when i'm not shooting someone in a field or water and want something lighter.
I'm loving the pictures that have been posted so far, some great samples.
With that said I will say that I haven't seen any shots that would make me think that the lens is a replacement for the 200mm f/2 or the 58mm f/1.4. The 58 and the 200 both have special characteristics that are hard (or impossible) to duplicate with any other lens. Of the samples pictures I've seen so far I can't say I've seen any "special" characteristics. With that said the pictures do look sharp wide open, the bokeh looks creamy (and sometimes swirly) and people generally seem impressed. If anything it looks like a great lens to complement the other greats. Personally I fall somewhere between the fanatics and haters.
I look forward to seeing more pictures. Keep them coming!
