Outstanding images, Kevin. Well done. Two different species. One with the white over the eye is a Clark's Grebe. The other is a Western Grebe with black below the eye and a yellowish-dull olive bill. They are known to hybridize,

my significant other Deborah Allen wants to know if you have a male of one species (Western) and a female of another (Clarke's)? She asks because the black extends below the eye on one of your birds (Western) while on the other, the black is above the eye (Clarke's). However that should not affect courtship display which is what you seem to be photographing here - for that you need the help of a Grebe person or a good field guide to understand what is going on...

only if the male brings her a really big stick...
this is really a great series - one could use it in an Ornithology class or textbook to show courtship rituals
