Rob didn't mention anything about failures.

He did say not as strong. Not as strong would seem to suggest a failure somewhere possibly, otherwise, how would strength be determined, other then through testing. I haven't seen or heard of any.

I value Rob's opinion.

Also, it fits with my personal experience. Some less-expensive third-party rails work very well, but they're definitely less strong than the equivalent RRS rails. I'm confident this is true, despite the fact that I haven't observed any failures, nor have I performed any systematic tests on them.

An opinion is just that, an opinion. Unless someone can point to anything that shows me proof of inadequacy with Sunwayfoto rails, I will continue to use mine. Not all of us have very deep pockets.

Is it possible that you're over-thinking this? Rob didn't say anything about inadequate, or about failure. He simply said, "not quite as strong".

Isn't that what we normally do on this, and most other forums, is over-think things.

Good point. I'll go think about something else.

It has noticeably more flex than the rrs one had.

Not a problem overall just an observation.

I also had a sunwayfoto panoramic head, that was solid, no problem with it.

I have a Sunwayfoto L-plate on my 6D and a RRS on my 70D. I honestly can't see any difference in performance and build quality seems pretty dad burn close. In fact, the Sunwayfoto finish work is cosmetically more consistent than RRS. I can't imagine flex being a problem with either design since smaller lenses are normally used (big tele have a tripod ring).

The main difference--and why I prefer RRS--is the RRS design allows removal of the L-component whereas the Sunwayfoto is a single solid piece. I rarely shoot video with my 6D so I don't mind the single piece design. My 70D was heavily used for video and I'm glad I could remove the L-component as it was always in the way of the LCD and cables. I'll probably buy the RRS body plate without the L-component for my 80D.

I've got some no-name stuff coming. If it turns out to be useful, and I like it, I'll jump up to the pro gear. I'm just not ready to spring for the top-brand gear for testing, is all.

Thanks.

Got the parts just before hitting the road. Had a chance to try them.

For cheap-o Chinese knock-offs they work great, so my next step will be getting the good stuff.
Thanks for the info.

I've had RRS L plates on the 5D and 5D II but with the next camera will be looking a little further afield just to see what's on the market.

Yes you want to participate in the Arca Swiss QD system. Now there are a lot of Chinese copies that work very well. The idea of a L bracket presupposes that you are not mounting big heavy lenses that have their own mounting foot and, typically, can be rotated within their mount.

For myself I dislike a Ball Head because I can never set it precisely. So for larger setup I use a Wimberly Gimble (much cheaper and still useful similar rigs are also Chinese made). Otherwise something like a Manfrotto Jr 410 head allows for precision 3 axis adjustment. Caution! Manfroto has their own QD system-a little different. You may decide to use it or readapt to the Arca system.

I bought a bunch of Chinese Swiss type mount to put on my Bogen rc2 devices so everything uses one mount. Also very hard to mount a l bracket on a Wimbley type device the mount is 90 degrees ou or at least mine is. Reason they are deside for mounting the lens and not the body so two mounts will be required, my ball head is a rrs BH-55 it complements the gimble mount perfectly.

I have both RRS and Acratech. The Acratech Long Lens Head http://www.acratech.net/tripod-heads/long-lens-heads/long-lens-head/ IMHO is vastly better than the RRS MH-01. YMMV.

Although I've never used them, the Acratech Universal L-brackets look interesting http://www.acratech.net/categories/l-brackets-and-nodail-rail.html Maybe I'll get one for my Canon Elan 7n Full Frame Film camera.
