It's the what we call, removable parket.
Or a removable wooden floor, you can buy it from any large DIY store.

Frank's floor looks very similar to what I did in my studio. I got mine at Ikea. Click together, no glue and I can take it apart if/when I move.

It came in strips 8 inches by 54 inches.

Great minds must think alike!

That light takes care of the rimlight as seen on the photo, the white line arround the model.

Here is a shot of my humble little garage studio along with my favorite makeup/hairstylist aiming the large reflector:

...and here are some of the results from this particular session (my 17 year old daughter):

Just so I understand this light is used to help seperate the subject from the background? If so is this just a strobe with no modifiers on it?

Thanks

Corey

Yes, that's what it does.

It looks like it might have barn doors on it but no diffusion. It's often called a kicker light.

Hi,
I use open strobes, gridded, strip lights or softboxes for that effect
Everything will give you another effect.
It's not only to let the model stand out but also to give more depth, look at the picture and you can see the effect, it makes the model pop out

Here's a fun one. I had two Alien Bees B800 shot to the ceiling as a huge light source. Then I used a B400 with a honeycomb grid and blue gel filter give it some depth:
