Steven, love the results of that setup. Can you just clarify which lights were doing what?
cheers....Simon
No problem Simon, to my right was a Beauty Dish (main light), to the left was an Umbrella as a fill-light, hard to see my hair light but it is up there, over on the left you see a large gold reflector, I fire a light with a bastard amber gel on it, that is what warms up the skin. Behind the two black V-shaped deflectors (that block the Light from hitting the model) are two more Lights, they hit the background from both sides, which give backgrounds an even color and or lighting.
hey curt, is there a reason your photos of your studio look like it was built in the 1960's - colorwise? I don't get why the color is so off in your photos. sh
No pics yet...but the studio is about to come alive.
17x15 or so, in my basement, with a walkout to the driveway so customers will have easy, logical professional access. The wiring is 99% done (only need the track lighting in for the portrait display wall). Got the paint tonite and the backrop/partition hangers so off to get that started. Strobes were ordrered today, and first 2 clients are waiting, well, plus myslelf (need product shots of what you get in a wedding package, senior package, etc).
Plan is to be operational by the weekend, with the seating/viewing/display area to come later this month and the exterior to be done in april with a May 1 target opening date.
Hey Chris. I know it doesn't look like much right now congrats on the studio spot. Glad to hear that it's getting ready to be pumped with life. I look forward to seeing the end result and the images that are the end product. Congrats on the studio space.

Chris,
Not trying to burst your bubble or anything, but isn't the cieling a tad low for a studio?
You're offering to raise my ceiling? Man, you're swell!
a touch under 8'. not much i can do about that - i have a detached 2 car garage (full of garage stuff) but it is only 8 1/2 and unheated, so the basement is the plan.
I know my clients will have to sit. such is life. I was going to do a studio for my own hobby uses, but then after speaking with several clients and photographers that run a photo biz form their house, i figured to add a sumtomer counseling area and showroom. So part will be that and the rest a small (aka short) studio.
I thought about that - the floor is not super level as the basemnt had walls for a garage and coal cellar that went in before the floor, so the floor was sloped for each room for drainage...it works this way, but removing the floor and lowering it 18" was a thought. Till I realized how old I was .
Here is today's shot - notice the NEW strobes? They arrived today!!

Hey, Chris.
Is the axe for the cranky models?
Technically, it's a splitting maul. Split firewood when attached to a energetic person
I was using it as a sledge hammer. YOu see in the floor the remnants of block walls - these remnants came out via jackhammer. Yes, I recomend an energetic person for that task too, but I only found volunteers after i was done
That's my only complaint. They are 9ft ceilings. I wish they were higher, but I can work with it, given the overall layout. It is hard to find a big open area like this for a decent price. Many strip mall locations are narrow and long. This is nearly square, which gives me many shooting options.
The location is great, on one of the busiest roads in town. I can't wait to get moved in and start shooting.
