I was excited to see the Bracket Pro app could do focus brackets, but then sorely disappointed that it could only do 3 shots. If it could be set to do a specified number of shots from the close focus that you start at out to infinity it would be a tremendous aid in doing focus stacks. Doesn't seem too hard, but I haven't heard about this for any camera yet. Why not?

Just another reason it would really be great if they'd open up app development a la the Android/Apple app stores. There are so many things in these Sony apps that seem obvious but get overlooked by people that clearly are developing from a programmer's perspective rather than a photographer's.
Is there anything else need than the above to write an app?

That app will run on your smartphone/tablet. Also the API for smartphone/tablet currently doesn't support setting of a focus distance manually, either relative or absolute position. This was last time I checked.
Currently there aren't many apps (probably because most photographers aren't developers) but there is however an app for focus bracketing that is something that is mentioned in this thread.

I've never tried this app. Does it give you a 3-shot focused stacked RAW image? Does it calculate what to focus on automatically? Sounds interesting.
I may tried it with the FE 16-35/4 as I assume it will only work with AF lenses.

The app works by the user setting point A (close) and point B (far). The app then take X amount of shots (configurable) of everything in-between.
Haven't had time to test it myself, was about to but noticed that i didn't have any charged batteries. I don't focus bracket that much but with this app it might become something i do more since it would be much easier to just trigger such a sequence.
Edit: To clarify these custom apps are not related to the WIFI-apps at all but rather related to the internal apps one can download and run without any WIFI-stuff. This also enables these apps to have access to more settings making it possible to create what i would call real apps. Basically one could re-create all the apps that sony has already made but add or change things around as one want.
What's currently missing are developers, but activity has risen since ma1co released v1 of the OpenMemories Framework and will probably rise even more since the launch of the Appstore that makes it much, much... more simple to download new apps in the future.

There are two excellent macro lenses for the E mount that could be used with a focus stacking app, the Sony G 90/2.8 macro for full frame and the Zeiss Touit 50/2.8 Makro Planar for APS-C. So, a focus stacking app would be most welcome.

Don't forget the third party lenses via adapters though. Also landscape photographhers benefits quite a lot by having an easy to use focus bracketing app.

You could always add an issue for such things at http://github.com/obs1dium/FocusBracket/issues
...but my guess is that auto-stacking within the camera would be something that would be quite hard to achieve (and outputting RAW as well) and would be so slow that it wouldn't be a "real" option when out in the field.
Edit: Maybe this stuff should be in its own thread.

I finally had the time to test it myself and it does work and it works as one would expect it would work (sort of):

Simple stack via Photoshop auto-blend
One get the choice to set X number of images. In this case i could have opted for the max between this distance which would have been 33 shots in total but i opted for 10 since this was a proof of concept.
To use the app one basically do this:
1. Set settings that one intend to use (exposures etc)
2. Set camera to MF mode
3. Open app
4. Set NEAR limit
5. Set FAR limit
6. Press 'OK' (middle button)
7. Choose numer of shots
8. Press 'OK'
After that a timer counts down from 3 and after that the camera starts shooting. If one got peaking on one can see how the app shifts focus after each shot just like one would expect.

I tried installing the focus stack app on my A6000, A7 and on the A7 II. It works on the A6000 and on the A7 II.
On the A7 the green and red bars never show up, the app lets you set a minimum focusing distance and after you press enter, you are asked to set maximum distance, but then the app becomes unresponsive on the original A7. On the A7 II and on the A6000 it works as advertised.
The app is only 37 kB, so it takes up virtually no space.
