Taken earlier this year from the western shore of Mono Lake. When I arrived, the roads into the lake were snow-covered so I hoofed it in from 395. The sunset was spectacular and I ended up staying much later than I had envisioned. Traveling back to my car in the dark across the Mono mud flats without a headlamp was an interesting adventure. C&C appreciated.
As for the headlamp, you should keep one in your camera bag full time. I have one lamp, that it's only place is in my waist bag I use to carry an extra lens, filters, etc. It's small, light and fits in there well. Plus I always have a light then, cause you just never know when one might need a light.
I can see why you couldn't leave, the colour and light is spectacular! A wonderful photo.
I almost always stay longer than planned so like Jim, I always carry a headlamp plus extra batteries as well as a powerful compact LED torch. It's not nice to be caught out miles from your car or camp on a freezing moonless night without light.

Thanks, Jim. Good advice. I have a nice lightweight headlamp so no excuse not to carry.

Hi Wayne,
Thanks very much. Very good advice. Yeah, I was surprised how quickly it became very dark - good learning experience.

I like this more than the previous one which already had gorgeous light. This one has more beautiful foreground subjects. And as your story explains, many memorable photo trips end in some kind of "fail" when returning back to camp / tent / car / home It is more like a rule than bad luck.

MJ,
Thanks for taking time to comment on my image. Yeah, I've had my share of trips/falls and dropped cameras and lens.
