p.1 #1 · Does shutter count really matter on D600?
Pardon my search, but I am at work and having difficulty on my phone.
I am looking to pick up a used D600. Since Nikon offers free replacement on all shutters, does the count really matter? As long as the exterior of the body is in good shape, and it functions fine now, is there anything to worry about? are there other electronics that have wear and tear that often break down like the shutter does?

Other things do wear out. Eventually controls aren't as responsive. I.e., you have to press the playback button more firmly, maybe the aperture or shutter speed dials aren't consistent any more, etc.
IMHO, shutter count is like mileage on a car- it's relevant for the price because it will affect how much you'll be able to sell it for down the road when you want something newer.
But I'd much rather have a body that's been taken care of (not used in dusty environments, everything works, etc.) w/ a high shutter count than a body w/ a low shutter count that was left out in a car during the summer heat, otherwise abused.

Unfortunately it's tough to honestly know what the camera has truely been treated like just by looking at it, altough you can usually get a good idea. I would hope that a body with 150k would still hold up (buttons wise/etc) if treated properly, and that compared to other bodies that don't have a free shutter replacement it would be less of a concern.

I would say that it doesn't matter much for the simple fact that you can get low-mileage D600s for next to nothing. There isn't much incentive to get one with a stupid number of clicks on it because the prices tend not to be much different. You're looking at between $700 and $850 for a D600 (used in box with original accessories, sometimes a grip and extra batteries).

If the shutter goes out due to wear or early failure they will not replace broken shutters for free (it has happened to folks and they needed to pay for shutter replacement). They only replace due to the oil issue. You can never predict when exactly the shutter will die. Also there are other wear and tear items as discussed above.
All that said, I don't see much high usage D600s. Its not regarded widely as a pro camera (even though I use it as one). Its not like a D3s or other D cameras, or even the D800 etc. which many have high counts due to pro or prosumer usage. Typical user of the D600 is the casual hobbyist.

Thanks for the info. A local wants to trade for my setup and he has exactly what I am looking for, but at 250,000+ clicks it worries me. Shutter replacement was supposedly done last year, but waiting on proof.
Also Steve, that is good news to know. Knowing that I think it takes a high "mileage" D600 out of the question.

At 250k clicks I wouldn't touch it. Every part has cycled 250k times. Many parts are probably worn out. It's not a D3, 4, 5. It's easy to find low mileage ones. Me personally I look for under 25k clicks on a semi pro camera or under 50k clicks on a pro level body.

250,000 clicks? No way would I touch that. It's more then just the shutter, that means 250,000 presses (or more) of the shutter button, etc. Just too much wear and tear.

Personally I wouldn't have a problem picking up a high usage D600 like that for $400 or so (as a second body), if its more than that doesn't seem worth it as I've seen some nice ones go for less than $700 here. As said above, I don't think I trust the build quality to really hold up over major usage, but at $400 it could be worth the risk as a 2nd body. YMMV.

What are you trading him?
Jim
Could be a remote triggered body, in which most of the buttons are rarely pressed. But who knows....

Basically new refurb 6D. But then a small deal on a lens with the deal.

To me, shutter count is one of those things that I have to take with a grain of salt. What if the body was well taken care of (not used in rain, sanding/salty conditions etc) but was used primarily as a timelapse body? Each button/wheel might have been pressed (3) or (4) times per 1k actuation's. In that case, if the shutter was just replaced, then everything else might be in very good condition. That however is not a common scenario. But in that same regard, I would be more concerned if a body used primarily for landscape had 100k actuation's than I would for a body used for sports/birding having 100k clicks.
Unfortunately, like many things, the answer is just "it depends".
250k is a ton of actuation's unless it was used primarily for something like timelapse though.

the shutter replacement was for another condition which to them is resolved with the free change out. now if the shutter fails under normal use out of the original owners warranty the current owner will be responsible for the repair/replacement.

I wouldn't necessarily rule it out, but the price should definitely reflect how used it is. This is just like buying a mid level Toyota car with 400k miles on it.
