Thanks. Great shot.

I didn't know the Hummingbirds seem to be in your area year round.
Here in the mountains of Northern New Mexico Hummingbirds and Turkey Vultures show up in mid to late April.
They typically head south by late September.
Then of course there are the cranes and geese migrations.

K-H.

K-haw, maybe Imagemaster flew somewhere ??

The Hummingbird is stellar. If I ever get a shot that good with mFT (or with any system) I'll be grinning ear to ear.

Now about shame this and that, one never knows. Oly President may darken the door to the this thread on occasion, see some of the work Imagemaster and Bobby put out and just declare that 400/5.6 needs to be.

I'm not craving any lenses at the moment; after smarting over the Minolta 400 APO I'm just detached. But if the 400/5.6 is announced I'll help support either Oly or Lumix with it.

Anyway, a shot from Florida from two weeks ago-

Many thanks MM for the kind words. I trust there was a barrier between you and those alligators. An impressive image. Thanks for sharing.
I doug up another image of that Hummingbird that crashed into our window. It's the only Hummingbird we ever noticed crashing.

https://photos.smugmug.com/KHW/Pics-by-Date/2015-05-13-E-M5425f12/i-GXTLtbJ/0/O/_5130002_Hummingbird_in_Hands_3600x2700.jpg

Olympus E-M5 + LEICA DG NOCTICRON 42.5/F1.2 @ ISO 200, f/2.8, 1/320 s.

Typically it's larger birds that do that from time to time although we have stuck to the outside of our windows various shapes so that the birds clearly see there is an obstacle.
We have now observed twice that a Cooper's Hawk is chasing the birds into our windows.
After the birds lie immobile on the ground the Cooper's Hawk simply picks them up and takes off with his/her meal.
That's one way to make a living.

Cheers, Karl-Heinz.

Not sure why you have the mindset that shooting at ISO 200 and f2.8 is going to give you the best results, especially when the subject is that close. You would probably need about f11 to get enough DOF to get most of the beak in focus as well.

If you have a feeder out that is not positioned in or near thick bushes or trees, you are just setting up birds that come to feed as sitting ducks for hawks. The hawks are smart enough to know those birds are easy picking out in the open. They will just panic-fly into windows even if you have stickers on the windows.

I bet your tired of seeing Poof's grabs.
Here's one of mine.
I think the M1ii is a keeper. I certainly enjoyed it on the four mile hikes. I certain cannot carry the 1DXii that far anymore.
But some of you know I'm playing around with the Sony a99ii, as an amateur noob I can tell you tha the Sony is quite capable as well, and lighter than the Canons.
Anyway here is one of my big white bird grabs....sorry I can't readily ID the bierd.

We used to have small birds fly from our feeder into our window, usually without much harm because they had not had a chance to build up much speed. Still... not good.
So I took a couple of old DVDs and cut discs out of them about 1 1/4" in diameter, and stuck a few (6) around the edges and two in the middle of the window with double sided tape, reflecting side out. Haven't had a strike since and it has been two years now for sure.

Mr.Licks that's all and good
But right now we have 18F and 9 inches of snow and building.
Few bierds will hit the window.
But I think I'll image a Cardinal of Blue-J in the snow today!

The Anna's hummingbird (the one in Tony's shot) stays around South Vancouver Island year round. I saw one yesterday at my in-law's feeder and it was -8C. Last Xmas I got great shots of a resident male that was at their feeder. This year the hummer was more of a rarity and no shots were produced.

I'm glad to see some higher quality shots coming into this thread. I was a little disappointed with some of the early postings even from Tony himself and I know he knows what he is doing with a camera and PP. Tony's recent postings have renewed my interest in the camera.

Good thing I have a private offer from a member who will go unnamed to demo the camera/lenses if I so choose. Maybe this spring I will entertain the idea.

In the meantime I will continue to lurk in the background and learn from the experience of all you early adopters.

I guess not if your windows are covered up with snow! Good padding, and insulating too.

Hope you don't have to bike to work....

Arbitrage, I bet you were looking at my early on posting! Doubt they've changed much.
Mr. Licks, nope, hospital owns me every other week and this is my off week. Some other fool my hop on the bike and cycle to work!
And yes the snow out back is a bit over 8-9 inches, no biggy, but 18F is the high and it's dropping. Time for me to head out and feed the hawks, Cardinals, and Blue-Js.
I'm real curious about the Towhee. Seems only time I've observed they stick to the ground--what do they do when the ground is under the snow?

Thank you MM. Superb image IMHO.
I'll wait and see what Sony comes up with for their A7r3 or A9.
For long tele work in good light m43 is hard to beat me thinks.
I also think the 300/4 Pro with MC-14 makes a darn nice 420/5.6 lens.

K-H, I've got the A7Rii and adapted many an EOS lens to it=never impressed.
the a99ii is a dream machine in many ways but after 4 miles toting it and the 70-400Gii the weight becomes a detractor.
Next day, another hike but with the M1ii and PL=no pain, just a joy to carry.
I'll keep farting around with the EOS kit as long as I can but over time it will go down
and the Oly will go up.
The Sony. Hmmm; maybe it's the middle ground transition.
I've got no interest in the a9/a7riii. Sony really irked me never giving up 400mm in native e-mount.
