Yeah ... but what lens would you mount on the super-duper Sony A9 ... the $11,000 colossal Canon 200-400/4L ... or the $12,000 gargantuan Canon 600/4L ... or the $13,000 humongous Canon 800/5.6L?
PS: I cannot talk like this on the Sony forum as I will be accused of trolling.
For UWA to short tele the Sony A9 seems to have the potential to be a compelling camera for me, complementing my Olympus E-M1.2 and long 4/3 and m4/3 tele lenses, such as 90-250/2.8, 150/2.0, 300/2.8 and 300/4.0 PRO that all have a crop factor of 2x.
The E-M1.2 shoots all these lenses without focus hunting, ideal for BIF as well.
With a fast Lexar memory card it can shoot 18 fps without ever filling up its buffer.
I would be dumbfounded if Sony with its slightly larger 24MP sensor relative to the 20MP of the E-M1.2 couldn't match or exceed the E-M1.2's superb AF performance.
Don't get me wrong, Bobby, for many of us who have telephoto needs, the Sony a9 can't replace what Olympus currently offers. However, as a hopeless gear head, I can't help but be impressed .
Oh, and those were some very colorful adjectives you used to describe the Canon lenses .
I think Sony is targeting the sports photographer market with the A9 and not so much the bird/wildlife photographer ... at least in the near-term future.

I think in the end Sony will fail in capturing either of those markets due to ergonomics and lens selection. But the camera still reads as a sweet spec sheet.

What card are you shooting with that you can shoot at 18 fps and never fill the buffer? I'm shooting the Lexar UHS-II cards and I'm only getting about 80 JPGS before the buffer fills.

Thanks for the question. Let's see whether we can figure this one out.
I just shot several hundred frames without slowing down, using the 64GB 2000x Lexar card, REV B.
I am shooting raw files only to the fast slot 1. Nothing to the slow slot 2.
Max fps is set to 18.
IBIS is on with priority over fps.
Release mode is off, meaning shutter fires only when in focus.
Silent low and C-AF.
I was using the 75/1.8 lens wide open.

Which other setting could matter?

Hmmn, I'm using the 1000x cards, I'll have to try one of the 2000x cards. I was under the impression that they weren't usable on the E-M1ii. That's pretty amazing if you can shoot continuous RAW without stopping. Have you ever tried just holding down the shutter and seeing how long it will go? Also, how many shots can you get at 60 fps before it slows down?
Missed you guys and posting, the she-boss has had me on a campervan conversion for the last two months and two trips in the camper.
Here's a grab from one of the trips-

IIRC the 1000x cards aren't fast enough.
Your impression is correct, the Lexar cards weren't useable on my E-M1.2 or E-M5.2 either.
When shooting video they crashed the cameras and the cards became unuseable.
The Lexar cards had a bug, but Lexar fixed the bug and issued REV B of those memory cards.
I sent my cards in and they came back working fine, the fix is free of charge.
I held the shutter down a couple of times for a minute or so, no slowing down.
I have not used the high frame rate.
Thanks K-H!
I'd surf in a bit here and there but the camper became an obsessive compulsive venture and took the better part of my life besides working, but it's functional now and my job is done. Poof now has to trim it out and that takes artistry so I'm now back to the camera.

A9? Not for me, but, niiiiice! .... Canon and Nikon better jump onto that (mirrorless) bus quick because that is where the future is. I would find it very hard to go back to an SLR, in spite of the few things I am not wild about in the EVF, but hey, we are just in the beginning really.
I looked, alpha9 is impressive but not in one spec I need=pixel density.
Remember though I'm a noob in the overall understanding of photography, but for what I shoot I crop, and sometimes need to crop a lot.
I've found that with my Canons often the 7Dii gives me better results than the 1DXii and right or wrong?? i contribute this to the aforementioned pixel density. Crazy?
So I look at the new Sony and say wow like many, but when I look at 24mp on FF I then compare to say the 1DXii there's not a whole huge difference eh? That and I already have 400mm and 500mm in EOS for wildlife/bierds. So why would I go alpha9 for those targets?
Now for landscaping I still have my aged A7Rii. I even bought a 5Dsr and it really didn't compare to the A7Rii DR wise, so alpha9 for landscaping is another no-why loose the detail?
Yes impressive Sony can now move all that data and wow to all the focus points, but when I'm shooting bierds I use center point or center point with the 4 assists; any more than that and for ME no real benefit unless in the rare event of a perfectly clear sky. Maybe I'm missing something, surely I am, but keeping the cluster of 1 or 5 points on the bird is just the way it works out for me.
Well there was one time---again clear blue sky---that I used the ring of fire on my EOS 1Div and got a good image.
UHS-II really? Now why didn't they do that on my a99ii ?
Now the new FE 100-400, if Sony had issued that one two years ago I'd not own mFT, but I'm glad now they didn't, just that happy with the M1ii.
Sometimes I wish Oly had stayed with 16MP on the Mark II and just improved on it, but there are advantages to going to 20, aside from the gain in resolution. I find the noise so fine grained now that it bothers me far less than on the Mark I.
Now, about that pixel density... good thing you didn't have your thumb on top of that nail! In FT terms, the A9 would boast a massive 5 MP! You are not going to do much birding with that! Bats in a cave maybe....
Roberto! Nice to see you back. I keep asking to see some pictures of this camper conversion, but we have yet to see one. It is a top-secret classified design?
Bears are out and about at Alligator River, but crops aren't what they were at this time last year. Are you and your photo instructor coming back this way this summer?
Welcome back, Robert! We missed you too! Great capture and sharpness!

Hey Bobby and hey Mitesh!
Thank you both very much
Mitesh I'll post some links to the overall camper-van progression...just remember this camper conversion is by two decades long backpackers who get by with very little--so no Corian, no oak veneer
On returning to the Alligator River we want to but next off week we're backpacking in the Mt. Rogers area, then the next off week off to Ontario, then end of May off to Utah. It would be warm/balmy June before we could head that way I think also she wants to either do the Canadian maritimes in the camper this fall or go to Finland...flip of a coin there.
Here's a page, first image showing the 'control' panel. I'm just surprised everything works-no sparks, flames explosions yet and we did this in 7 weeks a 3 days, and have already had 2 weeks in Florida living out of it and 5 days in the Smokies.
At Merritt Island Poof was driving and I was sitting in the sliding door (open) with my feet on the running boards shooting!
The real beauty is that on this trip to Florida I took a full on EOS kit, a full on Sony kit, and of course a mFT kit along with Poof's....no carrying gear back and forth inside motels and our normal routine would be to get up at 0500, be at the various lakes at 0600, on the water at 0630.....shoot until 1100 then back in the van and drive to the next lake where we'd again meet the guide and get on the camo pontoon boat. That would be until late afternoon, around 1600, so we'd get there early and I crawl up and get a 2 hour nap in while the batteries were charging and/or backing up files there on the spot.
Obviously the camper-van is small, but we can park anywhere and with only 1300 miles on it we still got 19.5mpg (Florida is flat, no way to get that mileage here in the hill country).
