I was given a tip regarding the location of a pair of merlin. The day before the full moon it comes up an hour before sunset providing magic hour light and what appears to be the full moon. Ligning this photo up was tricky as the moon moves quite fast and the bird is moving as well. I experimented with many aperture settings to get the detail in the moon and finally found that I needed to stop down all the way. As I experimented the moon kept moving so I had to keep moving my tripod closer. A touch of flash provided the catchlight in the eye. all this and the best one was taken as the sun kissed the horizon.

The falcon was quite far away and I was watching it through my D500 + Sigma 150-600 Sport + 1.4x Tamron SP TC when. Then a snow squall came in providing a beautiful environment and I started taking photos. Focusing was tough and the wind did not help either. I took a few dozen images under those conditions and then the sun popped out while it was still snowing. That's what you see here. I'm using fill flash as the bird is backlit and cropped about 1/3 off for composition.
Really loving this camera, glad i picked it up to photo my newborn It was very dark in the delivery room, she was born at 4:10AM and the low light performance on this camera is awesome, i was able to get a few keepers at ISO 12800+
