So I looked at these on my laptop(ips 1080p) and they did not look anywhere near as good as they do on my 27" ips LG 4K screen lol. Amazing how much variation there is screen to screen.

Wow. Just wow! I have zero long glass but I know that down the road my kid will be in sports and so I'll probably take the plunge. Nice to see lovely images that think outside the box of BIF or sports. Thanks for sharing

As a "dad with a camera" I can hardly believe it, but I actually took a shot of wildlife. The shutter is not quiet but these guys were unfazed

40 pages and the look of these files are mediocre at best.Has nothing to do with all the great photographers, images, composistions. There is no pop, clarity or depth to the images.Curious what you guys who also own a D7200 0r D800 think about the look of the files.

Hi Doug,

After shooting the D800/D810 for over three years, I have been spoiled by the fantastic DR and IQ of the their beautiful RAW files... and no crop sensor camera including the D500 will be able to match those files in my experience. That being said, what the D500 gives me is a superior AF system and 10FPS for my passion which is birds-in-flight photography. There are always trade-offs it seems, so I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of DR and IQ for the strengths of the D500 which is the phenomenal AF system.

Because the D500 files are less forgiving, I've found it more important to get the techs right in the field while shooting... when I do that I've been quite pleased with the IQ. I'm really pleased with the D500... everyone's mileage will vary.

Here's my work if you're interested to see what I've been able to achieve with the D500.

Kirk that is the pop that i am talking about. They look great. It must just be the down sizing on this sight.I really want to get another DX for wildlife. My last one was a d7100 and loved the image quality but the buffer and Iso had limitations. And do like the way the D500 is layed out more like the D800 Doug M

The buffer is virtually unlimited, so cool to shoot at 10FPS for as long as you want to. You should rent one to experience it firsthand... but only rent one if you're ready to buy one... it's that good, and once you hit that shutter in CH there's no going back.

Good luck, and don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions.

Kirk

Doug a lot of the photos of birds in this thread have very non-distinct backgrounds, low light situations or areas with a lot of cover, and thus there is not a lot of pop/depth to the photos. I have had my D500 for just under a month and below is my 1st attempt at BIF taken at around 10AM on a sunny day. I think the photos have ample pop/clarity and depth!

Taken from a local pier, the pelican started out flying out over the ocean, but moved towards land and a busy background with building and trees that were similar in color to the bird. Shooting in CA-F low at 5 FPS, I was only hoping that the D500 AF and Group 25 tracking would follow the pelican and not start hunting. To my relief, all 20 shots in the sequence were tack sharp. The 2nd shot is the next photo in sequence but blown up to show the sharpness. The wing tips are a little soft due to the DOF limitation at f3.5, I should have shot at f4 or 5.6. BTW these were taken with my 11 year old Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR lens, version 1. I will not be looking to upgrade to the new $2,600 Version 3

I'm a long term D750 shooter and after renting the D500 for a week (when it first came out) I too found the files, in general, lacking in comparison. I was also extremely bothered by the specular highlights being difficult to manage. I shoot a lot during less than optimal light and need skin tones to survive.

But, of course, like anyone who's ever handled one of these little DX monsters I ADORED the snappy mechanics of 10fps and an endless buffer. What to do, what to do

500 vs 750 by mp0363, on Flickr

Well, I returned it and then was equally unimpressed with a D5 rental so I sat on my hands until Photokina. Really, really, really hoping for my D810 upgrade but then Nikon took a big crap with their 360 gopro so I kept shooting away with my D750.

Until one day while shooting indoors at a trampoline park with silly ISOs and my slow camera, and it just sent me over the edge!! Sure the 80-200 didn't help matters, but I just knew my whole set up was dated for this type of shooting. Since
I always keep my RAW files (because tastes change and skills in post grow) I started to play around with some files from months prior.

Maybe not quite as flexible in post as my D750 (or compared to the D5 RAWs) but still easy to slide up shadows and exposure, and seemed to respond well to BW and other film emulation conversions. One in particular gave me the silly grin. The sharpness from this sensor is amazing; like D810 amazing. And shallow DOF is possible.

DSC_0211-Edit by mp0363, on Flickr

This got me thinking... I reasoned that at the end of the day, DX is fabulous and even advantageous with long glass. Since my kid is 3 and will be doing sports in a couple of years, even if I find some challenges from everyday shooting (compared to FF) the D500 will do very well. I looked at this image thread (and on flickr) and there are stellar results in colors and sharpness of BIF and sports that is equal, or better, than anything the D5 can put out. And old dog mechanics of my D750 are forgetaboutit. So I got one.

And I got some specific glass for her. The 20/1.8 gives the perfect walk around ~35 (eFOV) and the 70-200/2.8e gives the perfect reach glass. My images are looking good. For landscapes and general, I see no difference from my D750 results.

And yet, the big test for me is how does it do for children? Well, I'm going to gush forever about the mechanics being a liberating thing, and the sharpness is there in the eyes and fingers, but overall I still think I prefer the images from D750. Not that the D500 is bad, but (so far) I can see a difference that is beyond my ability to describe intelligently.

_MDP0344 by mp0363, on Flickr

I will keep practicing with the D500 (experimenting with different lenses to see how it responds) as it's the camera to grab just because it fits my rapid, run and gun style so well. It's very easy to advise someone to look elsewhere if you don't get a thrill from snappy AF, 10fps, and an endless buffer. Oh, I envy the slower shooting styles.

If Nikon does something special in 2017 then I got 4 grand waiting for them. That would give me the best of both worlds (Dx and Fx).
