The following images were taken from a kayak in the Skagit River estuary a couple days ago. I used the Nikon D500 and Nikon 300mm f4 PF lens with the latest Nikon 1.4x teleconverter. Having a small and light weight setup with great reach makes wildlife photography from a kayak a reasonable endeavor (versus using a large and heavy super telephoto lens).
I went to practice BIF, knowing we'd probably waste an hour. The only birds out were tree swallows, doing their crazy swoops and dives at the speed of sound (or however fast they fly). I tried a bit, then decided I need to learn BIF on something slow, like a seagull or osprey or sloth bird!
Anyway, here I am with the D500 and equiv 900mm (2X on a 300f2.8). So I found some butterflies that were too far away and went all duffer mode on them.
Nothing special, but a refurb TC 2 III on a refurb 300 f2.8 with a D500. I figure I'm very near the edge of silliness here, but when I stop it down and use a tripod for once, the pics are sharp.
One day, I'll have enough practice to use this one a bird flying -- but slowly flying
