Good Lord, I'm gonna wear out my "like" finger. What great images!
Not just the D500, there is some real talent shown here!
By the way, the 16/80 kit lens looks real good, Mr. Hahn's fourth shot into
the sun looks pretty darn good.
I have a question for the D500 owners with a f5.6 telephoto (such as the 200-500 or 80-400) and 1.4x converter. Do you still get the 3D tracking AF mode using the 1.4x?
I have a D600 and using an 80-400 AF-S 5.6 and with just the lens alone I get 3D tracking. Once I put on the converter, the lens is now f8 and I lose 3D tracking. The D600 only gets the single center point so I think I get why 3D tracking is no longer available.
However, the D500 has 15 points (9 selectable) when at f8 so I was wondering if the 3D tracking AF mode is still available.
Thank you for the clarification. I thought it was just the center point for whatever reason.
I am slightly disappointed to hear 3D tracking isn't available with f8 lens, but I could just not use the 1.4 TC with a D500 as I would get a similar focal range using a DX crop as I would using a 1.4x on my D600. However if I wanted to go REALLY long then the 3d tracking with the 1.4x with the DX body would have been nice. 800+ mm is quite some range
Is Group AF still available while using f8 lenses? I am unfamiliar with this restriction since I don't have that AF type on my D600.
Group AF and the Dynamic AF modes are still available at f/8. I was surprised that you can actually select all the AF points still. Nikon says only a small group in the centre is supported but it still lets you try with all of them. I tried a far corner point and in decent light it focused. In contrast with my Canon bodies they don't allow selection of the "unsupported points" at f/8. Except with the 1DX2 that allows all points and modes at f/8.
Thank you. Wow, that is pretty amazing to hear it can select all focus points with an f8 lens. I thought I read that there were 15 AF points total with only 9 selectable using an f8 lens.
Just to be clear, you've observed this behavior on an f8 lens and not just setting f8 on your camera, right? I know its a a very basic question but just want to double check since technically that shouldn't be possible. If with an f8 lens that is pretty incredible it'll still go all the way out to the edge.
The 16-80mm lens has been great, I didn't expect the results I got out of it so far. I'm out of town for a couple weeks without my camera, but I'll be exploring more of what it can do as soon as I return.
Thanks again for the clarification on the AF modes available with f8 lenses. I went ahead and ordered a D500 with the 16-80mm. It'll be my only DX lens but will be very curious to see how it performs as a general walkaround. I've really enjoyed the 24-120 f4 on my FX body but this will be even lighter and more portable.

Thank you again.
I was using the 200-500 with the 1.4TCIII so it was 700 at f/8. I was surprised also but I had read reports in the past that seemed to imply that it was possible.

Thank you for that clarification. That is very cool, I figured it'd just be the 9 center points. Going out to the edge will be very helpful. The AF system must be crazy good on this thing.
I just put my order in for a D500 last night and I can't wait to try it myself. Thank you again.
One from 50 yds and goin' away... "buttshot" with the 200-500.
Got off 5 shots from the cab of my truck and they were all in focus.
Gotta love the D500's AF. It's really freakish, just how fast it is. Oh, Mommy!
100% crop
You should query your circle of friends to find out who duck hunts around Matagorda Bay. I really wish I was shooting in the 90s when I lived down there. Every morning skimmers, whistling ducks, spoonies, harriers, stilts, etc. right in the duck blind.
