Visited the in-laws in Phoenix last month, and took an extra day to photograph some southwest specialties. Well, not really specialties for those who live there, but mostly new for me. After looking at a few other FM threads on where to go, I ended up spending one morning at the Gilbert water ranch which was kind of slow, then drove south past Tuscon, and had a fantastic morning at Bill Forbes' pond at Elephant Head.

Comments/criticism/advice all appreciated.

1) Cardinal cousin (Pyrrhuloxia)

2) Lots of interesting Picidae (Ladderback Woodpecker)

3) Cousin of (2) (Gila Woodpecker)

4) My favorite (on same perch as (2)--Verdin

5) No visit to the southwest is complete without this guy (beep beep)

6) Not really an Arizonan, but at least he likes cactus

7) I knew it was some sort of goldfinch at the time but had to look it up later (Lawrence's)

8) Black-throated Sparrow

9) These guys are everywhere (and noisy)--Curve-billed Thrasher

10) My second favorite (Cactus Wren)

4) is beautiful. I like the shape of the dead tree. That's a natural arts. I hope the cactus is not in the background though.
