that's borderline scary, i should go now

i do need to get a life, however - i just finished another de-center test on my 35/1.4 (now that i found that goofy focus target): with focus distance at 3 feet (because that's the width of my air hockey table and i know it's perfectly square), the extreme right edge is out relative to the extreme left edge by about a 1/2 to 3/4 inch at f/2 and 3/8 to 1/2 inch at f2.8 - so i'll keep it (actually, i bought it used and will sell it after i get back from my 2nd trip to Italy in August and hope we get a GM at Photokina! Now, who am i really starting to sound like?) ...Show more →

Many thanks Guy for sharing your current lens lineup.
It will be interesting to see how it will change from here on out, as you respond to new challenges and opportunities.
I'm really after a great 35 F2. I'm starting to think now the Batis 18 might just be to clinical in look over the Loxia 21 which I think matches these GM lenses better. Having this good a zoom really frees me up to use MF lenses more and for more specific things. I'm still a big fan of the VC 15 and I do love the Loxia 50. I actually really like the Loxia line. I do want a GM 135 just like this 85. The Rokinon is a place holder until than. I'm pretty happy now so the pressure is off and I can stay native mount.

Hey all.. Just got my GM 85 delivered !!!
It's large but not as large as i thought, which is great.
As to the important stuff, the sound it makes..
I thought it would be much louder. The sound is not more than i've experienced with some lenses before really, of course not silent. Kind of hard to describe it so i recorded it..
This is me focusing a bunch of times so you can hear the sound, AF-C as you can hear at some occasions.
Autofocus is not FE 55 fast but i was worried it would be SLOW which it's not so far.
The sound it makes is for those of you that are old when you had a bad phone line and have noise, that kind of noise, or when the tv shows where done for the night and you had the "ant war" only darker sounding as we called it here in sweden.
@charles.k about color and contrast: I see it the same like you. I made a profile for the GM and skin tones are wonderful and just perfect (with other lenses this was good too, but never that way). If I'm using a linear profile, there are a lot of details, I can work with. Both together gives me more possibilities to push files.
@thebratts about AF-sound: My copy is one of the louder ones, I think. But I made some tests: I shot in a church with silent mode. Also I took some pics at a grade ceremony. Then I was model for someone, that was using the GM85 and did a shooting with it by myself. I also handed it to another photographer to "just take some pics". In none of these situations someone looked puzzled, because of the AF-noise. The shutter release (if not in silent mode or of any DSLR) is much louder.
Lol. That's if I actually sleep. Funny I was looking at my Loxia 35 tests I did awhile back and have to say the corners where very good at 5.6. Be nice just to have the trio and call it a day with the zoom and 85. I'll wait that out though. I'm going to test the Loxia 50 and the Sony 28 against the zoom which I was not able to do in my initial tests. My zoom is damn good at 50mm so I'm wondering about that because a few said the 50 was better and I want to try it . I bought the 28 for the A6300 for the grand kids. I have a new one coming in like 3 weeks. I'm also losing interest in the Batis 18 as I feel it's not going to match the GMs like the Loxia glass does. Out of the Zeiss glass families I think the Loxia line will match up better to the GM lenses today and down the road. Today that Loxia 21 really matches the feel of the zoom very well.
If you think this is too short DOF, try shooting with the EF 85/1.2L without eyeAF.
In either case, I agree it's not easy to get both eyes in focus at this distance.

And MF for the FD 85L But for whatever reason the contrast was perfect for the EVF on the A7--I got a ton of keepers with focus peaking, more than other 85s, and often more than AF 85s.

Often with the 85L II I revert to the "Advanced"mode with the MB IV for close detailed portraits. The focus is very quick and accurate as you can just use one finger on the focus ring to nail the focus point. No AF system will be critically accurate for these style of lenses wide open f/1.2 and at close distances.
I do find the eye AF with the GM 85 finds the near eye correctly and accurately focuses on the eye. The only issue I have is face recognition is that it will not always focus correctly for wide open f stops, as it will pick the eye brows or nose.
