I have read elsewhere that the focusing noise can be due to the fact the latest A7 firmware is not installed. Link here
This may not be the case here, but it is worrying that many are complaining of the same noisy issues.
I have got to say I'm very impressed with what I've seen so far form those lucky enough to have the lens in their hands. I frustrated by the lack of delivery date from a UK supplier, but it seems some members form Switzerland and Sweden have theirs so hopefully delivery to UK resellers is imminent.
I am also a little surprised by the amount of CA or purple fringing I'm seeing in some of the images, I was lead to believe it was practically non existent in this lens ......Show more →
I updated to 3.10 last night so I have the latest firmware on my a7rii. There is a thread on dpr where someone posted a photo showing rub/friction marks on the inside of the barrel and have a similar issue with focus noise. I think this might be a defect. Concerning since I would have thought these premium / professional lenses would be manufactured with quality in mind.
Mine arrives tomorrow morning, if there is ANY noise, it's going back Monday.
Sony needs to let people know what this is.
Not taking any chances on such an expensive lens and given Sonys history....I'm really hoping there is not a f1.4 curse on them!
From the dpr thread, Asian customers have been reporting these sounds for a week now.
As I continue to test this lens, the noise is really starting to bother me. It is really loud! It is an unpleasant mechanical sound - like something failing. As a note, I have 3.10 installed on both of my A7RII's.
Are all GM 85's like this? Is there anyone out there with a reasonably quiet lens? Your comments would be greatly appreciated.
I am on the fence about whether or not to return the lens. The IQ is terrific; however, $1,800 for a lens that sounds like a coffee grinder?
This week has been a real letdown for me. My GM 24-70mm f2.8, out of the box was great. For some reason something changed in the lens and it is now noticeably less sharp than my Canon 24-70mm f2.8 II. It went through a phase where it refused to focus at all and when normal functioning returned, it was softer - particularly at f2.8. As a note I babied the lens and it was never bumped or dropped. I just returned it to B&H a couple hours ago. I think I will wait on replacing it. One of the outcomes of my testing was realizing just how good the Canon lens is... but, no Eye Focus.

Is yours as loud as the one I posted in my video? There is no way this could be acceptable as you really couldn't use it in a quiet environment... and this is a flagship prime lens aimed at professionals.

I just opened the box and tried it on my A7RII (v3.10)
I won't be able to do any resolution tests today but in regards to AF noise, it's not Sony's quietest lens. There is a lot of heavy glass to move and perhaps this lens needs a beefier/louder motor.
AF is no speed demon but we can't compare AF speed to the slower Batis 85/1.8. I'm used to the Canon EF 85/1.2L II where in comparison, the Canon has slower AF.
I tested the lens for about 15 minutes and can't yet draw any conclusions. Definitely the lens from the pictures above is defective. I will play with it for a couple hours tonight and examine the inside to see if there is anything like that happening.

I don't see scuff marks like that on mine either. But I can see that where those holes (for lack of a better term) in the barrel don't look to be the smoothest machined cuts ever either.
Another thing that someone pointed out and I verified -- if you manual focus and do so very slowly, no noise, it is silent. I don't know what this means; is it the motor or friction with the movement of the lenses in the barrel?
