Spent the weekend in Bisti with fellow FM'er DBehrens. Having never been here before - we soon found the value in using GPS to find our way in the dark. Even so - learned the first lesson in GPS-ing: Walking a straight line isn't always the best line. Those that have been here know what I mean. Those that haven't - we found a few alcoves we were not looking for!
One of the goals for the trip was to shoot the eggs - and if possible - with the Milky Way. This, of course, required waking at 2:30am, hiking in the pitch black, in 30 degree temps. Nothing that bad - but when I told my wife what I was going to do all she could say was "Sounds Horrible". Although she is usually (always?) right - this night she wasn't. A great time. Two shots blended - one for the eggs - the other for the MW.
Funny, even though we saw several cars in the parking lot - we didn't run across another soul. Just the two of us - and countless cow patties. Thanks for looking
Nothing special on the foreground light - got to the eggs around 3:30 - and just shot until the sun came up. Not sure what time the foreground was taken - but if I remember (computer is in the office) it was as the first hints of light started to appear. Also used the Nikon D810A (1srt time) - really liking the M* mode.
Excellent work here. Love the close up detail and the MW looks very natural. I enjoyed the backstory of your wife's opinion of the adventure. Sounds a bit familiar!
i really love this shot and its one of the best I have seen from bisti. Hard to believe you got that much light on the FG without using something but the cameras always surprise.
Just love the overall look and the processing. I also want to thank you for getting me inspired to start shooting. Got more into night shots last year but thought it was still a bit early to get a good milky way shot. Your shot has shown me I am wrong.
As everyone has said, this is an outstanding shot. I will be making another visit to Bisti (and other wilderness areas) in the next few weeks, can hardly wait.
Wow - thanks so much everyone for the positive comments. Really appreciate it.
Lighthawk - Glad you enjoyed the story - can't really complain - she is very understanding, which allows me to get out and shoot whenever I can - along with the "encouragement" to do so!
Mysh - I started shooting the nights early last year too - Really looking forward to shooting other locations this "MW season".
