Amazing that it is coming with a VF 100% + 1.0 magification

Yea and only 7 years after the Canon 7D did that. I hope you don't think the 1.00x magnification is FF equivalent spec, as it's 0.65x FF so well below VF size of even low end FF which do about 0.7-0.72x

Canon uses a 1.6x sensor, so 1.0 magnification on the Canon is less than 1.0 on a Nikon DX camera.

As for the naming standard, it mostly makes sense:

Pro bodies, D1, D2, D3, D4, D5 (D1-2 are DX, D3-5 are FX)
Enthusiast bodies, D100, D200, D300, D500, D600, D610, D700, D750, D800, D810 (D100-500 are DX, D600-810 are FX)
Amateur bodies: D3000, D5000, D7000 (All DX)

What would have made more sense was if the FX enthusiast bodies were 2-digit. The reason why they're not is probably that when the D700 was launched, the amateur Nikon bodies where still called D40, D50, D60, D70, D80 and D90, so those numbers were already taken. I guess I can live with the confusion

Let's be honest the D300, D500, D700, D8xx are cut from a different cloth than the recent three digit D6xx, D750. The D6xx and D750 are great cameras but without AF-On and say 1/8000 among many other things simply aren't in the same league

I've been waiting for this announcement for years! I can remember ordering the D300 in Nov 2007 but never could have imagined that this day would finally arrive!

That, and it's hard to see where the D500 is a solidly better choice aside from the F-mount.

No resolution advantage- why this sensor rather than the 24MP DX sensor in the D7200? Better high-ISO? Was low-ISO DR sacrificed?

More 'sophisticated' AF system, but does that really make a difference? This can get in the way as much as it can help.

4k video? But is this a reason to buy the camera, rather than an alternative, and how is the focus tracking, which is a major selling point of the 7D II? Will it be a tripod-only, prefocus video queen as

I am very glad that it uses a new sensor. My 2 biggest gripes with the 7100 are its tiny buffer, and the sensor. I just don't like the images from it once the ISO starts to climb. I think the colors just crumble, my fiancee's Panasonic GX8 might have more noise, but there is just something I don't like about the 7100 photos, I can shoot hers in lower light (the IBIS helps, too, of course). I love my D3s, and have been hoping for a good crop frame pairing. I had just about given up, was starting to look for a good deal to jump on for the D750, today I quickly changed gears, pre-ordered and will sell the 7100.

I am a happy camper!

oh yeah 0.63x vs 0.65x that's a huge difference. You're clutching at straws mate.

I'm not clutching anything, just pointing out a fact. According to dpr's review of the 7D II, the size of the viewfinder of that camera is equal to that of the D7100:

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-eos-7d-mark-ii/4

The viewfinder of the D500 is larger. It's as simple as that.

You mean low end like in Canon 5DS (0.71x)?

Dear Nikon:

Thank you for not putting a cheesy pop-up flash on the D500. Oh, and thanks for the radio flash control too. Well played!

I don't usually get excited about the usual incremental camera upgrades, but this looks to be a great offering! Just ordered mine with grip a couple hours ago! Can't wait to put it through it's paces on migrating waterfowl in March!

I am but one of many who have done so!

Interestingly, a few Nikon pros having been field testing this little beast for a while. It will be good reading as their reviews are published shortly.

A very successful D300 user friend of mine was headed the D810 way until I advised him to hold off last month as a little sleuthing added up to a new DX from Nikon. He's ordered up a D500 as well.

I don't think many thought DX was dead - it's Pro DX that's questionable. Time will tell how big the market is for this camera. I think Nikon's inclusion of 4K will probably widen its appeal a bit, esp since they don't offer any other APS-C body with that feature.

Just got a D750 so I am not in the market for a new camera, but it looks like Nikon developed some exciting new features for the D500 and D5. Better autofocus, faster frame rate, bigger buffer, and automatic focus adjustment are features that can help the photographer take better pictures, or at least have a higher keeper rate.

Kudos to Nikon, I hope the new cameras are as good as they sound.

For me, one negative on the D500 is the 16mm viewfinder eyepoint. From what I have read, there is a trade-off between viewfinder magnification and eyepoint. Longer eyepoints favor those who wear glasses; greater viewfinder magnification favors everyone else.

Longer eyepoint is how I wound up with a D750 (21mm eyepoint) instead of the D7000 (19.5mm eyepoint). 1.5mm may not sound like much, but it makes a big difference in seeing the viewfinder to those of us encumbered with coke-bottle glasses.

I hope that a new flagship DX camera means that Nikon will release an 85mm-to 105mm equivalent DX lens. 60mm or 70mm f/1.8 or 1.4 would be sweet.

. I was anti-DX since the D1, and here I am thinking about buying a D500. That camera is chocked full of goodness.

But, I'll hold out for the FX version, and I bet it's just around the corner. At least I hope.

Between this and the 16-80, Nikon definitely has a solid kit. I'd say that the 70-200 (f2.8 or f4) and 200-500 go with it as well even though their not specifically DX lenses, leaving only ultra-wide uncovered. Of course, Sigma's 8-16 is really quite good, as is Tokina's 11-16, 11-20, and upcoming 14-20 f2... If the D500 has decent quality at ISO 4000, it'll be quite a camera.

But you have to buy the optional WR-R10 & WR-A10 to use radio controlled flashes. Add $180.

I am just as glad as everyone that Nikon has finally seen the error of their ways and rectified it. As for Andre, I think Nikon felt so bad after what they put him through that they sent him a non disclosure agreement, along with a D500, and he is out shooting with it right now. As for me, I will stick with my mantra that I don't need the latest and greatest as soon as it is announced. I will wait until the D500 replacement is announced, pick one up when everyone jumps on the new one and use the $ I save on more glass. Excuse me, I have to go look for a low mileage D7200 to accompany my D7100 and fossil D200.

Has anyone seen / read anything on the shutter rating? 100,000 150,000 200,000? I have been looking and can't find that info anywhere yet.
