Dumb question but do you have a card in it? There's a setting that can prevent firing without a card.

I have done that before But not this time. Both the SD and XQD slots are populated and XQD is primary.

Shot an entire MLB with the D500 and 200-400 Tuesday night. Very pleased with the responsiveness and colours. Found the manual metering to be slightly different than my D3s but that was a short adjustment to get it right. It was very happy at 4000 to 5000 ISO and I enjoyed the crop factor with the long glass. The only thing it misses is the bokeh of the full frame sensor. I found backgrounds slightly more nervous at F4 compared to full frame.

I don't use the back button for AF so I don't know what the side effects it may have on the camera.

I must doing something silly, but my D500 just refuses to fire even with the "release" setting. So far the only customization I have done on the entire camera is set back button AF.

My typical "routine" is a head shot at the 1st barrel, changing leads at the 2nd...
and either rounding the 3rd or a finish line pan. Things went wrong at the 3rd
but I kept firing away. Second set of pics shows the burst. She was fine, and
have I mentioned how much I love shooting this body?!

Anyone knows how to turn off or disable the snap bridge wireless Bluetooth? It drains the battery faster than usual.

check the manual around page 145.

I put mine in Airplane mode and also turned off the send to smart device. Seems to have taken care of the battery drain issues.

Will try doing as suggested. Thanks very much!

I haven't had opportunity to do much experimenting yet with mine. (I shoot mostly raptors) I will give your settings a shot and see how they perform for me.

Great series!

I would think she was happy to see her horse get back up, but afraid it might fall back down on top of her.

Will, I love that in your first set you captured that "OH CRAP" moment on her face when they started to fall. Always good to hear no one was hurt.

Had to look back through them because it looked like her leg got stuck under the horse, but when I looked closer seems she adjusted her foot so that it wouldn't take the horses weight on it.

I mean, that is the obvious workaround, but the battery life is just so bad. One of the features that I was really excited about with this camera was the connection to the phone, downloading photos is cool, but I was more excited about the syncing of time and GPS coordinates. No more forgetting where I took a shot, or to change the time on it when I am in a new time zone. It would just grab it from the phone, and bada bing, bada boom, you're good to go.

But the reality is that it sucks the battery so fast, it's just amazing. I mean, I have never seen bluetooth cause such an insane battery drain. There is something wrong with it. And out of the box, the settings are insane. Why does it keep the bluetooth connection alive after you shout it off, even if you either took all raw photos, don't have auto download on, or its finished transferring to the phone? It gives a message that it's so that it can keep transferring photos. Nikon, if there are none queued up, they can't magically appear before I've turned the camera on again, so shut it off! This is such simple UX that they got so wrong I'm baffled by it. Sure, you can turn that off, but you shouldn't even have to. There is no reason to keep the connection open if it's not doing anything, and can't possibly start doing something until it's turned on again.

Don't get me wrong, I love the camera, but this one thing is a disappointment. There have always been a couple things that they could put in to the firmware so easily that would go so far in improving UX (how about writing to your backup card when the camera is idle, so it doesn't slow burst mode?!?!?!?!?!). As a developer that does UX, I am dumbfounded that they don't add a few little changes that would take a day to code and greatly increase the user experience with their cameras, it just makes no sense. The ROI is so obvious, they could probably ask a firmware dev to do it in his spare time one day and it would get done., unless their development staff is so bare-bones that they're working overtime every day just making things work (which doesn't seem to be the case, their release cycles are such that I don't think it's the case).

Anyway, I really hope they release a firmware fix for the battery drain issues, there is no way that a simple Bluetooth LE connection that's getting a data object that contains two strings (Lat-Lng) and a datetime should require so much power. There has to be some sort of bug in the code. I get it if you're transferring hundreds of photos and videos over wifi, that's different. When you're not doing that, there is no reason for the battery drain. I suspect it's a simple matter of something not getting turned off when it should (maybe the wifi radio). I've been thinking about it (and been frustrated about it) for the last day and a half as I get ready for a backpacking trip where I will be away from power. I really want the GPS coordinates of my shots, but also need 5 batteries to last a good 2.5 days (just got a 5th battery from Lens Authority).

Has anyone found any third party, higher capacity batteries, that actually work with the D500?

EDIT: Going to try this with the two battery packs that I already own. http://www.amazon.com/Newmowa-Charger-Nikon-EN-EL15-D800E/dp/B00QGJ919U?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

I wasn't defending the battery drain, just letting him know how to turn it off.

I'll have my MB-D17 grip on Friday so I plan to test battery life using one of my spare EL18a batteries from my D4s with Wi-Fi enabled to see how long before that drains.

I've never geotagged my images in the past so having it on or off doesn't really bother me but it would be nice to have the feature available if I decided to use it without having to worry about severe battery drain. Typically what I've done when shooting is while visiting specific locations, I'll video a quick clip when arriving and just talk into the microphone with time, date, location, etc... then when I get home and download my shots, I just drop the video with the shots into the same folder.

Haha, sorry if my quote made it seem that the rant was directed at you. It's what I'm trying to figure out at the moment, and I wasn't trying to imply that you were cool with it or anything.

Your idea about the video clip makes a lot of sense, and I've thought about doing something similar. Again, sorry if the rant seemed directed right at you

I've only just started with the geotags, using Google Photos to display my images (since they now allow unlimited uploads) I love that it shows right where it was on Google Maps in the info area of the photo. Hopefully it adds that in to its auto search feature where it figures out where photos were taken, and if you go to the search page, you have options of faces (automatically finds any photos with that same face in it) and places, where it shows all of your photos in a particular place. Before it only worked if there was famous stuff in it (and the pictures taken just before or after, or I think album names), but the Geo-tagging makes that always work.

It's all good.

I do agree with you though. It's senseless to add a feature only have it drain your battery so quickly that it's not practical to even use it.

When I was setting up my camera, I was charging the included battery so I grabbed a fully charged battery from my D600 since they're the same. By the time I finished making changes in the menu and then taking less than 100 test shots, I noticed my battery was dropping quickly. At first I thought it was my battery but it's not too old and I had just charged it earlier that day. Did some digging and figured out that it was the Wi-Fi sucking it down. Charged the same battery back up, turned off Wi-Fi and no problems.

Hoping that they fix it in a firmware update as it would be a nice option to have and use, especially since I do like to travel a lot for photography trips. It would also stop the weird stares I get while out shooting and talking into the camera....lol

Has any one tested the d500 with the 300mm PF yet or f8 AF? I am interested very interested to see how well the d500 does with the d500 300mm PF and TC 2x.

I doubt the AF will be great unless in good light, but if it's usable for still subject it should make a great combo for when you need reach in a small size.

The D500 + 300PF is a pretty darn good combination with and without 1.4x TC (I don't have a 2.0x TC).
AF is very fast and combination is feather light. :-)
It's my (new) travel birding combination.

When you pair the D500 to your phone, which battery dies first?

Gracias, Pablo. The whole fall was real smooth and almost choreographed in slow motion.
Kinda like they've done this move together a time or two before. The arena was really soft
and fluffed up (they drag rake every 5 runs)
