Another zoo shot with the 300mm 2.8 VRII...Calgary Zoo's Kermode Bear (genetically it's a black bear that happens to be white)

When do we start a separate image thread?

the af acquisition and lock on this camera is astounding. Finally a camera that doesn't lock onto the background anymore! Sequence after sequence of 20 or so shots each, like the one below - tack sharp! (skipping frames due to 5 image limit per post)

Yes it seems the 200-500 was built specifically for the D500!

Has anyone figured out what makes the best stylus for the touch focus/shoot off the live view screen? My fingers are not small enough without zooming a lot first. I'm going to get a couple off amazon (cheapies). When shooting from a tripod this looks like a great feature.

What focus mode / settings are you guys finding works well with birds in flight with the D500?

AF-C Group to avoid locking onto the BG. In a3 - set to "Erratic" for fast flying birds like Falcons and "5" for AF Blocked. And I also set it to "release + focus" priority. By using AF-C Group, I don't have to do too much AF "pump" like I had to with previous DSLRs

Does "release + focus" mean that that shutter will not fire unless it thinks it has attained focus?

"Release + focus" means it will fire the shot as priority even before it achieves focus. It sounds bad but from my experience of about 3k shots shooting the falcons, I have found the D500 af acquisition and accuracy is so good that I haven't gotten much OOF images. If you set it to "focus" priority, the frame rate would slow down and sometime it would not fire until focus is achieved. By then, the moment would be all over.

I have used many DSLRs from both Canon and Nikon in the past. But I have never been more confident with the AF accuracy of any camera until now..

Thanks Thang

I haven't had opportunity to do much experimenting yet with mine. (I shoot mostly raptors) I will give your settings a shot and see how they perform for me.

Page 73 in the manual has a pretty good description of what each setting does and how it will affect focus and frame rate.

Have never been a fanboy of any brand Quang. I have gone back and forth between the two systems so many time I couldn't even remember. Lol

I must doing something silly, but my D500 just refuses to fire even with the "release" setting. So far the only customization I have done on the entire camera is set back button AF.

Dumb question but do you have a card in it? There's a setting that can prevent firing without a card.
