I wonder if the battery grip for it will ship at the same time? I have them on the same preorder so would hate for the camera to come in and sit around waiting for a grip to be in stock as well.

You won't use it without a grip?
Of course I would. Grip and camera are all on the same order and won't ship until everything is in stock. If the camera becomes available but the grip isn't then I will have to wait. Going to call the retailer and see if I can separate them.

Call the vendor and tell him to ship separately if it looks like the grip will be late.

This last Sunday, B & H told me that they were expecting the first D500's to show first week of May. That's all I know. We will see.
Anxious to get mine.
And anxious to get some feedback from others, especially on high-ISO, AF and buffer performances.
You can read any D5 review to find out what AF performance is like, it is identical except for frame coverage. A recent SportsShooter article asserted it was 50% better in speed, tracking, and acquisition than the D4.
Buffer info is also known for the D500. Around 76 RAW images on the SD card only, 200 if you use an XQD.
ISO performance is what everyone wants to see, which I suspect will be a small improvement over the D7200 in RAW and a huge improvement in JPEG. And lower base ISO DR.

I'd already read all the reviews by about mid-Feb..
I want to read what shooters like Trench Monkey and others have to say.
I suspect we are expecting the high-ISO performance to exceed all crop sensors heretofore.

Not that has been mentioned anywhere. I wouldn't bet on that one.
In a recent interview as well Nikon said they were using the dual CFast/dual XQD to help differentiate the D5 from the rest of the bodies as well.
Well I don't think a lot of people were expecting the D5 to have two different variants, one for CF and one for XQD, but that seems to be what nikon has released...and evidently the memory card module is swapable...not cheaply, but at least it is an option. I was just curious, hoping to avoid xqd if possible, that is if I decide to buy a d500.
What is everyone's opinion on whether or not the D500 will be in short supply when released or will be plentiful? A buddy pre-ordered one, but didn't right away. He's concerned he may have to wait a bit to get his. Myself, I'm thinking about getting one as well. I was going to wait to see what people had to say about it after some time with it and figured they'd be in short supply for a few months. If not, then I'd be tempted to pull the trigger sooner.

The dual card variants of the D5 were rumored well before the D5 was announced, and confirmed shortly after it was announced so if the D500 was going to follow suit, they would have said something about it I think. Stores would also have two different SKUs for the D500, and they would have wanted it to be a pre-order option. Don't get me wrong, it's a great idea, I just don't think it will happen. The module in the D500 is also less likely to be swappble given there is much less space to work with. I'd have liked to see it dual XQD or dual SD personally, but it's not a big deal either way.

Given that they grossly underestimated demand, I would expect initial supplies to be limited while they fill all the pre-orders and NPS orders. If you plan to wait a few months and make a safer decision, I doubt you'll have much trouble getting one.
Chances are better of getting one immediately at a less popular on-line store. Or a local authorized Nikon dealer. I've bought a couple "hard to get" camera bodies within a week of the release date by traveling to Provo/Salt Lake and buying outright, rather than being on a wait list at Amazon or B&H. The downside for me is travel time and I pay sales tax & gas...

Random question--will the D500 have a CF only option like the D5?
No the d500 has one of each on board...which i kinda think is stupid...but it is what it is.

actually the D500 is 1 XQD and 1 SD UHSII capable. no CF at all.
its a pathway product. you have your SD cards and when you try a XQD card in it and find the "subtle" improvements that it provides. you sort of lose interest in SD. it the "not committed" camera body.

While it's unfortunate that it ads another $100 ish to the sticker price, I for one am all for moving to a faster work flow. Might just be me, but for the benefits that XQD brings and the negligible price difference I'm not about to complain.
i have zero issues w sd cards actually...they are plenty fast for me, and nice and cheap. SO are the card readers. If they really want qxd to make headway, they need to make them at a competitive price and the hdware as well. I'm not opposed to more advanced technology certainly...but again..to what end, and at what cost.
SD cards are getting faster and faster....if it aint broke...
It is a bit of a bummer on the dual card slot issue, imo. The d500 isn't even compatible with its sibling the d5 on that front...cf and xqd or just cf on the d5, and sd and xqd on the d500. So if you get both of these bad boys you will need three different card formats. Good for sandisk/lexar!
