p.21 #1 · Nikon D500 Announced

Well considering the camera isn't shipping yet, I guess all images will be based on reviewers chosen by Nikon with pre-production models. I got to handle a D500 for a couple minutes at a NPS session yesterday. We weren't allowed to put our own cards in the cameras because they were pre-production. The camera felt good in the hand (deep grip) and is slightly shorter than the 8xx models (I guess because of lack of flash) and a bit lighter. It seemed weird to shoot at 10FPS with a non-gripped body.

Not sure if someone posted this before, but here are some sample shots by C.S. Ling photography. Courtesy to DPReview's forum where I found the link. You can select the D500 from the tabs at the top.

I am not sure if this is a pre-production or not, but they look very impressive, especially the kingfisher at ISO 6400. I've never seen this much detail from a DX JPEG at ISO 6400.

The original presentation size looks good but the larger version shows a bit of motion blur and what appears to be NR smoothing. Here's a link to the larger version (which is still only 2.8MP). I'm guessing it needed a bit more shutter speed.

ARRRRGH! I keep wanting this D500... I could afford it if I sold my D750 and two lenses.. If I was able to sell them at reasonable used prices I would have enough to purchase a D500 and a second hand 17-55 2.8...

But doing so I lose 24mm and VR from selling my 24-70... my 70-200 2.8 mid range zoom becomes longer and well since I use the 70-200 for dance recitals and the like I won't be able to go as wide unless I spend money to buy a 50-150... I also lose the use of a backup body
...Show more

Im in the same boat- keep holding out to see the comparison specifically with ISO and noise between the D700 and D750. That will be my decision-maker.

I'm a bit confused here but why are those cameras being cross shopped? I don't own either so maybe I'm missing something.

For me, and me only. Because I am not a professional but fall in the prosumer purchasing category. No one camera provides what I need/want/use the camera for. So I have to this point had to make compromise choices. A D500, if the high ISO is reasonably similar in grain, feel, noise, and DR to the D750 would be a bit of a holy grail item to me because it would tick off more checkboxes. Do I NEED it, no I could get by for years with my D750 and a D7200 to offer the rest of what I want... but do I have to?

A D500 based on specs is a sub Full Frame Gatling gun, that offers an AF array that spread across the whole frame offering more flexibility in quick composition (yes I know that focus and recompose exists but even that has it's own limitations and issues vs just being able to frame once acquire focus and shoot.) Being crop it also opens up to the use of DX lenses and FX lenses with fewer compromises... well with the exception of some of the odd gaps in quality DX lenses. For me I would LOVE the chance to repurchase a Sigma 18-35 1.8 and marry it to a DX body worthy of it for low light photography....

I mean for me it would be a better all purpose camera than the D750 I own... and the D750 is a camera I definitely enjoy! But it does have it's limits and things that other cameras are better suited for

For cross-buyers.

You and me both, bud. Time just cannot move fast enough, at least in my opinion. I am so excited to get my hands on the D500, but the wait does stink. I do hope that I was able to get my order in soon enough for the first batch of shipments, and do not have to wait until the middle or end of May to get mine.

I think we maybe ok, that's why it got pushed back a month I think so they would have a good amount on release day. I hope.

I ordered a new Jeep once. They gave me a website to go to and watch it's progress through the production cycle... Now that was torture! 8-10 weeks as it slowly worked it's way through.... Then it was on a train from Toledo... Then it arrived in Denver.... and then it sat, in the giant vehicle unloading area, for about a week before finally getting shipped to the Western slope...

So this is nothing...

Good point and I have a great "this is nothing" example. The Tesla Model 3. Over 300k people have made a $1,000 deposit on a $35k+ car that won't hit the streets until late 2017 or sometime in 2018. I'm one of them.

My wife always rags on me for my inability to pospone gratification. And my response is always the same...why the hell would I want to do that. I have taken many 3 hour road trips to pick up newly released items when I track down a single available unit way too far away. Must be a guy thing. Not that I am proud of my OCD, but it is good to know I am not alone.

Are different regions seeing different release times ? My local dealer (Shanghai) told me another 2 weeks (10 days ago) so I'll be going in to check next week.

Something strange in Thailand. When I asked the biggest Nikon shop/dealer in Bangkok 3 weeks ago and the man said it will take approx. 6 months before it becomes available. It is hard to believe why Thailand would be delayed for such a long time in comparison to the other Asian countries. Time will tell but the price difference on Nikon gear is 25% to Belgian prices.

Strange, initially I was told sometimes in May from a store in Bangkok that I pre-ordered. As of two weeks ago, I was told end of April. At Nikon Day recently, Nikon rep also told me they expect shipping before the end of this month.

My dealer here in the US (DC/Baltimore region) thiinks they will be in next Thursday or Friday. They also think the D500 is going to be a big seller., which wouldn't surprise me. The D7xxx line was never really the spiritual followup to the D300.

I wonder if the battery grip for it will ship at the same time? I have them on the same preorder so would hate for the camera to come in and sit around waiting for a grip to be in stock as well.
