I am kind of curios about the 20mp sensor. I didn't expect the flagship DX to have lower then 24mp today, but I am more then happy to give up 4mp if it means better IQ especially at high ISO. I wonder if it shares sensor technology with the d5.

I'm not sure if it does. I think the press release for the D5 states that it's a Nikon devolped sensor. However, there is no mention of that for the D500, so it's not clear who developed the sensor.

I don't think many thought DX was dead - it's Pro DX that's questionable. Time will tell how big the market is for this camera. I think Nikon's inclusion of 4K will probably widen its appeal a bit, esp since they don't offer any other APS-C body with that feature.

Looking at lenses for the WA range there are certainly question marks, but this is similar to the Canon situation.

Canon has some APS-C lenses with great value for money (10-18STM, 55-250STM, 2.8/24STM), but all of them are relatively slow and not a great match for a (semi-)pro APS-C DSLR. Nikon has the new 16-80 that looks like a step up compared to Canons 15-85IS lens, but for a complete Canon or Nikon APS-C lens line one may have to add some third party glass or accept compromise.

Many of those 3rd party lenses are excellent; I don't really see a gap with APS-C anymore.

Very interesting development. Regarding DX lens availability, I'm a little worried the change in AF and the supposed refinements to AFFT might lead to all the excellent third party lenses becoming paperweights. Something the likes of Sigma might not be able to fix in a hurry. Otherwise, I find myself lusting after this camera, big time.

I almost had the big one when I got the email this morning and read the specs. I'm shocked.

.. i'm so happy that i hold out on my upgrade. this d500 is really something else, maybe it's IQ will be cleaner than the d750 at 12k iso. i can't wait for march for the first shipments to arrive so that we'll see what these cameras, d5, d500 are all about ...

I'm past worrying about prime lenses for DX. The zooms are so good, and there are lots of excellent third party alternatives available. My standard setup with the D500 will probably be Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8, Nikkor 24-120mm f/4, Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6 plus one or two primes, probably 28 and 85mm. The Tokina is the only one that doesn't work on the D810 except when shot in crop mode.

Someone mentioned 3-axes VR...I am little confused, there is no that kind of info in the official spec on Nikon website. Where did that come from?

From the Nikon Website....

4K UHD video, suitable for professional productions
The D500 can record 4K UHD (3840 x 2160)/30p/25p/24p as well as 1080/60p video for up to 29 min. 59 s*1, with simultaneous output via HDMI available. It is also possible to generate 4K UHD time-lapse movies within the camera. In Full HD or HD mode, the D500's electronic Vibration Reduction function*2 reduces the effects of camera shake in the horizontal, vertical and rotational directions during hand-held movie recording, while Active D-Lighting preserves details in highlights and shadows to capture footage with natural brightness.

*1Recorded in separate files.
*2Image area will be slightly smaller in DX-based movie format.

My impression is that the real (S)WA zooms for APS-C are either quite slow (like f/4-5.6 with need to stop down 1-2 stops for best quality) or really big and heavy. There is lots of choice for bright, high quality FF primes in the 20-35mm range (with some of them still relatively compact/light) but almost nothing like that for APS-C. But maybe I missed something, don't know how the new Tokina performs near wide open (used the Tokina 11-16 previously but was not happy with its performance).

your issue might be with the camera/lens combo. on a Nikon D7000 it was outstanding.

there was quite a substantial difference in the DxO scores between the D7000/D7100 mount and the 450D/50D/70D mount. even on the 70D it still didn't do as good as it did on a D7000. yes it did not do too well in the canon corner.

Btw, did anybody notice that D500 records 4K video only in crop 1:1 pixels mode. That is so much cropped as 4k would be on micro4/3 cameras.

I actually feel underwhelmed, considering the offerings in other cameras. 4K in a DX makes sense, but kind of a year late. I guess if you have a ton of Nikon glass, you are drooling over it. Being on the Sony and Pentax platforms, my IQ on images and ISO performance are amazing. The Pentax 645 D I own is always on a tripod for amazing landscape work w/ great glass. Nikon with the D800 made me wondering why you wanted to ever be in the DX camera in the first place.

IMHO, it's a toy .. but I guess if you do video, it might compete with the Sony A7s. Oh well. Nikon fanboiz like Sony's base, will love it. However, its to late for me to consider a full DSLR for video > choosing mirrorless all day/everyday.

You are talking about the Tokina 2.8/11-16? I used it on the 450D and my problem was that even at f/5.6 the borders and corners for infinity subjects were quite soft while the center was great. Even at f/8 it wasn't what I would expect from a lens with this price level. You could be right that this is related to the body (AF or sensor) but as there is no AF adjust option on 450D it was unusable for me, so it went back. My impression was that the problem was field curvature, but I don't remember the testing I did.

My current Canon 11-18STM is very slow, it has a little bit of field curvature too and PD-AF on the Canon 450D is unreliable. But when focused correctly using Liveview it is very good, and for such a small and cheap lens I can accept some compromise. If I buy a D500 I have to look at DX SWA options again.

I understand that Nikon prefers that we buy a FF camera for the best (S)WA images, but one can always dream of a camera that can handle everything you throw at it, so you don't need to carry an extra body ;-)

Hopefully the scaling in FullHD is good enough, otherwise this would be a serious limitation for (S)WA video.
But all the better for people who want videos for wildlife etc. ;-)

this is 20.9 MP DX

the crop factor of every FX lens is far away from that pixel density (as of today)
for example a D600 DX crop factor is about 10MP

there is also the FPS which can make the difference in capturing a decisive moment or not (so far no FX out there - except the D4-5 etc) can match the new DX top of the line + latest D5 AF system (no FX cameras yet)

it would be nice to see a FX camera that has a Crop factor at about 18-24 MP
keeping the NOISE benefits of the FX, but possibly losing in FPS (and the focusing module not covering all )

but this eventual gem, would cost 1k 1.5k more than the D500 starting price

Shhh. Don't tell Nikon but may have just lost a D5 sale from me - I think this D500 is exactly what I want for wildlife. Not saying a D5 is out of the picture for sure, but I'll be getting a D500 first. Very exciting and surprising.

Agreed Steve...the D500 & D810 combo suits me just fine.

Just the other night, when I shot the retrieval of a pickup that had fallen through the ice because its owner was a drunken airhead who decided to go fishing on the river at 11 p.m., I stood there thinking that if only I wasn't such a Nikon fanboy, I could lug a 645 and a tripod around with me all the time, and feel better about myself.

It's a big, ol' photographic universe out there. I'm sure Sony and Pentax do an admirable job servicing their share of it. But in the part of the uni where still PJs live, they're just a rumor.

well, it did on my D7000 and as I said its performance was even measured lower on the 450D by a large margin. the D7200 does quite well with the 11-20/2.8. of course the pedigree of Tokina leads back to Nikon.
