p.1 #1 · 80-200 won't autofocus on D750

My old AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1:2.8 D lens will not autofocus on my new D750.
However, it does autofocus on my coworker's D810.
Is there a setting that I'm missing?

By 'won't autofocus', do you mean it's not focusing accurately, the shutter won't fire, or the AF just plain won't AF as in nothing happens when you try to focus? Sorry to be pedantic, just trying to get a better picture of the problem.

Which AF mode is the body in? AF-S, AF-C? D-9, D-21, D-39, D-51, 3-D, Auto-area?

It just won't autofocus, nothing happens.
So far, it won't work in: AF-S, AF-C or AF-A. I'm not yet familiar with the other settings.

Check the AF-On setting (AF activation) and also see what your AF-C and AF-S priorities are set to (focus,or release), also see what the AE-L/AF-L button is set to.

If you want to keep things simple set the AF activation to shutter/AF-On and set the AF-C and AF-S to "release".

It's odd that it would work on your friend's D810, but not on your new D750.

Do other lenses autofocus on your camera? Have you checked the AF/MF switch on the left hand side of the lens mount?

AF activation setting is on. Set AF-C and AF-S are set to "release". AE-L/AF-L is set to AE. Still no AF.

Is AF activation set to "AF-On" or "Shutter/AF-On"?

I've had older D lenses occasionally refuse to focus on my 750. It seems to be an alignment issue between the lens and body contacts. I've always gotten them to work by twisting the lens back and forth a few times.

Make sure the mode dial is properly set.

Did you answer joefoo, do other lenses focus correctly on this body?

Is the manual Fstop ring on the minimum aperture (f/22)?

I have heard of some compatibility issues with the old 80-200 AF-S D lens on D750. You may want to do a Google search. I have the same lens and it works wonderfully with D600, D7100 and D800.

My af-s 80-200 mm f2.8 does work with my D750 but will not with my Nikon tc 14e. This is the same problem I have with my Nikon 300mm f4 af-s. Funny thing is both lenses will focus using my Tamron 1.4 tc. I believe the problem is the same as many people are having with the early made 300mm f4 af-s with the D750. Even though Nikon has not admitted a compatibility issue with these lenses and the D750 the apparent fix is to have Nikon replace the DC/DC converter on the lens. There is currently a thread on Nikonians of a poster that finally got Nikon to fix his lens after sending it back multiple times since August. Nikon wanted to originally wanted to charge him over $350 for a repair but only after a lot of persistence did he get the repair done and covered by Nikon. BTW Nikon does advertise that the 300mm f4 af-s is compatible with the D750.

I had the same problem with my early AF-S 300/4 with my D750. It worked fine on the D800, D810 and D610. Even more frustrating was a that a used late serial # of the 300/4 in the camera store worked fine on my body. The problem was due to a lens electronic component called the DC/DC converter. This needs to be replaced because the DC/DC converter used in early AFS lenses are not compatible with certain new cameras like the D750. Replace this part before shipping your body off to Nikon for evaluation or replacing the expensive silent wave motor (SWM) to correct the issue. Nikon replaced the SWM on my lens which did not fix the problem and it was only when the DC/DC converter was replaced that the problem was solved. Here is a link regarding the posting on Nikon forum about this problem: http://photo.net/nikon-camera-forum/00cwYR

I sold an AF-S 80-200 to a buyer with a D750 He had the same problem. The lens focused fine on his D7100 and also focused fine on my various bodies but not on the D750. I ended up taking the lens back and selling it to someone using a D700.
