This is Kate. She's nine years old.
I was still in the testing phase of trying to get images to look sufficiently 'painterly' when I saw Kate eating breakfast with her parents at a local restaurant. I thought to myself "I have to find a face like that to shoot"....
I ate and pretty much creepily stared at her the entire time, trying to memorize her face, so that I could try and find someone like her in the future (I'm not always the swiftest boat in the fleet)... Luckily I was subtle and didn't freak anyone out.
As I was getting up to leave, they did as well, but there was a big line up to pay, so I went to the washroom. While I was in there, I thought, "I should ask them", but when I came out they were gone. I thought, "oh well".
Then I went outside, and saw her parents standing outside talking to someone they knew who had just arrived to go into the restaurant. I had my card ready, but the little red headed girl was no where in sight, so I put the card back in my pocket, turned to leave and as I did, Kate was running towards me (Her parents were directly behind me and I guess she'd gone to the car). Anyway, I took the hint from the universe and turned around and approached her parents. They called a few days later and brought Kate in.
Probably the most mature and wise 9 year old I've ever met.

I had a similar encounter with a 16-year-old ginger girl and her dad made me feel like I should register as an offender. I still shiver thinking about the look on his face. All that aside, excellent job on the capture, tone, and especially like the freckles.

I really love this portrait. The freckles are awesome, and she has great eyes that look right through you. Good work.
I'm always afraid to ask about photographing young women (even age 20-30) for fear they'll think I'm a pervert or something. I guess it's because we hear about so much strangeness on the news that folks don't feel they can trust.

Wonderful shot. This girl has a very old soul (sorry to get so Carlos Castaneda's on you). Your portrait of her captures her inner maturity and beauty.. Classic pose and post work. Glad you took a chance and gave the parents your card. Bet they love your work.

Very nice portrait and wonderful lighting. I am lucky to have an 8 year old granddaughter to photograph. I am way too introverted to ask a stranger, but wish I did have the courage to ask. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful picture of this young girl. I would have guessed that she was older than 9 though.
I remember many years ago going to Ireland and wanting to get a picture of a red haired Irish girl, but the only one I saw was at the airport in London before getting on the plane to Ireland. Needless to say, I did not get her picture.

Oh wow, I absolutely LOVE this!!! And good for you for approaching the parents, that is hard to do. I've been tempted (and have actually done it once) but I am pretty sure I came across as a total creeper in my nervousness. This is just stunning!!
