Technique question. I've noticed on a couple of posts, this being one, where you've got a fairly shallow aperture, but you still have a good amount of focus in front of the subject. Are you focusing on the dog, ahead of the dog, or do you have an adjustment to focus on the dog and have a slight amount of front focus?
Image 6 is a good example, where the face is in focus, but so is the grass in front of the feet. is it just my eyes playing tricks on me and they are on the same plane, or are you pulling the focus slightly in front of the face?

Hi Flacoeje,
In picture 6, my pup was about 5 1/2 months old. This is a Shih Tzu and tiny, maybe 7 lbs at the time. I know he looks huge and ferocious in picture #7, but he is a little itty bitty thing although he thinks he is a massive wolf. Full frame camera, 200mm (70 - 200) . F6.3. I estimate the distance to him there maybe 20’ maximum. I tracked him like I do BIF, just keeping the center point on his nose. It was probably 3” from his nose to the back of his pony tails. He has really tiny legs, maybe 2” tall. So if you go to a DOF calculator, maybe 1’ is in focus. The pup is also moving from the right to the left in the frame meaning the plane of focus is on a slight diagonal and you can see the strip of grass in focus is at a diagonal.
So, its deceiving. Maybe 1’ of the plane is in focus. I am using to working with hummingbirds with a DOF measured in an inch or so. A foot DOF is HUGE for me. Tracking this giant wolf sized pup was pretty easy I hope this helped. Its a matter of size and he is very tiny.
