p.1 #1 · Request: Users who went from Canon 6D to the D610

I'm looking to hear from people who went from the Canon 6D or similar (5DMKII/III) to the Nikon D610 (or similar).

My background: Bought a Nikon D300 in 2007 I still have today fully functional. Very used to the ecosystem of Nikon. Sold all lenses for in 2012. Bought a Canon 6D in 2014 I shot with for a few weeks - had to sell it due to other purchases of interests at the time. Only thing I really disliked about the 6D was the heavy moire/AA patterns in video. Really liked it besides that. I'm now looking to purchase a video-friendly DSLR once again along with a couple of lenses - and trust me - deciding which system to go to is killing me.

A part of me want to go Nikon since it generally seems like better, rigged and more advanced cameras on certain aspects (also on paper). Another part says Canon because they somewhat feels better in my hands physically and I do have a couple of friends that posses a good amount of lenses for that system. Also - living in Denmark - the second-hand market is way rich on Canon gear for some reason. Since I'm going to buy a small selection of lenses myself I'm not all too worried not being able to share lenses with my friends nor buy them 2nd hand.

Can anyone with experience on both systems (especially the ones that changed brand entirely) give me your thoughts on the switch and why? My own instinct tells me, essentially starting from scratch, that I should focus on the glassworks and less on the house itself since I'm familiar with both.

I have 2 Nikon D600 bodies and Canon 6D. Nikon has really good sensors, but I will tell you - If you shoot people I will go with Canon... Sometimes I shoot both cameras in the same time and always my favorite shoots are with Canon 6D, colors looks just better to me. But sometimes you have not idea what camera it was used.

I will say get Canon, but better take a look how much will cost you all system ( camera body, lenses, flash ). I really want to change to Canon, but last week I found crazy deal on D810 so I will keep my best Nikon zooms for a little more time. If I can just get Canon 70 - 200 2.8 II zoom I will have best from both systems

Better get D750 over D610 because focus points are too limited ( similar like Canon 6D)

compared with a 6D, the D610 will have much improved AF. more points, better tech, etc.

Went from 6D, 70D, 5D3 to D610 and D810 recently.
just do it. you'll get setup in a few days and feel comfy after a few weeks.
it's worth it.

More points doesn't mean better. 6D will focus better in dark places - where outside focus points of D6xx will have really hard time. So this points are there but I don't think they really do a job in some situations IMHO

So all 11 of the 6D's focus points will focus down to -3 EV or is it the one cross type only?

I think it is just the one cross type that goes that low ... trying to recall using the 6D @ Mammoth Cave.

A diff point @ 6D vs. D6XX ... single card vs. dual cards (in case that matters for you).

I've not used the D6xx yet, but am seriously in the middle of evaluating the switch ... various reasons I'm not happy with Canon's current offerings (i.e. wish the 6D II would come out with dual slots, etc.). But, trying to make sure I understand the difference between the frying pan & the fire, before I make such a jump.

That's mean - D600 / 6D has only very good center point / so 39 points in D600 - is probably not better than "only" 11 in Canon 6D. At least not that much better to make it a winner

So what you were doing above was comparing the 6D's 1 cross type sensor to the 30 on the D6XX which are not cross type?

The D600/D610 has a lot more in common with the 5DM3 than it does the 6D. I don't own both at the moment but I have used both extensively, and owned a D600 for a couple years. D610 vs 6D is an easy decision IMHO, it's a harder decision compared to the 5DM3 where you start running into a few things that each does better than the other. Can't beat the D600 for value, if you are hoping to spend more money on glass.

D600/D610 AF is quite good actually. It tracks better than the 6D, and the outer AF points are hardly useless (AF point coverage could be a little better, but I've never missed a shot because of it). The 9 center points are all cross type. Just have a look in the D600 images thread here, that thread should answer any questions you might have about AF performance. When I had both cameras with me, I could get them both to focus in near darkness so really I don't think you are going to approach any hard limits there, especially in normal shooting conditions.

Ergonomics, default JPEG colors, etc. are all personal preference. I assume most people shoot RAW anyway.

I don't shoot video at all so I can't comment there.

YMMV, that was my experience.

I totally agree with Mark and can't believe anyone would suggest otherwise.

6D is best for portrait work, difficult to track, almost like a 5D Classic.
D610 has a way more robust AF system.

that is not to say that a pro with a 6D can't do sports. but you get my drift.

I switched from a 6D to a D750. Not a D600, but I switched mainly for the glass anyway.
Some takeaways and reasons for my switch:

- Nikon has better compact primes. The 1.8G lenses are amazing. I shoot more street and on-the-go type photos, so weight and size is a priority for me, and the 28,50,85G have been awesome.

- D750 has a better AF system, better viewfinder, better dynamic range, higher resolution.

- Nikon ergonomics are not as good as the Canon though. The D750 is not bad, but I still much prefer the Canon body style. Nikon also has a smaller mount which I have found makes switching lenses a bit more difficult than the Canon EF mount.

- I sorely miss Canon's landscape and telephoto zooms though. The 16-35 F4 was heavenly, and Nikon doesn't have any 70-300L equivelent.

- Little Nikon things I love like a tilty screen, independent vertical and horizontal single AF point selections, shutter sound.

I don't regret the switch at all, and I have much more fun in the Nikon system. The D750 makes the 6D feel very primitive in comparison. In an ideal world though, I would have a Canon system for landscapes and wildlife, and a Nikon system for street.

I MISS THE 135L

But nikon has 16-35 f4 vr, so you should check that out.

The 135L was awesome as well, but I prefer Nikon's 180mm 2.8D

I tried Nikon's 16-35 F4 and wasn't impressed, personally. Ergonomically awkward, optically not on the same level as Canon's, and abysmal sunstars (a must for landscape in my opinion).

^^ Sounds like you got a bad copy, minus the ergonomics (that part is purely subjective). Mine is very sharp and my single most used lens. If you really miss that lens, maybe give another one a try.

This year I went 6D>7D2>1D4>D810 and absolutely loving Nikon. I do wish I still had 10fps but the detail and dynamic range are amazing to work with. I also love my 200-400mm f4 especially at 1/3-1/4 the cost of the Canon and I like Nikon AF better, probably just a personal preference. Having shot Canon EOS since 2001 I thought ergonomics would be a big issue but I was right at home with the D810 after a couple weeks. Now I love it.

No doubt the 6D produces beautiful images and I almost went to the 5D3 to get something with similar IQ but better AF for high speed wildlife. But the D810 rules them all in my own experience Now if we could get a 8fps+ 40mp Nikon with 14 stop DR and similar AF to the D810/D4 with even high ISO capability, I'd be pretty darn happy...my guess is that the next generation D850/D900 will be very close to this.

heard the AF is slow on the 180
Looking for something like the 135L
the fact that the 135L is f2! inexpensive! great AF! great bokeh! - all WIN.

the nikkor 135 doesn't have great AF, or I'd go that route.

I would consider anything in the 135 to 180(ish) range, with 2.0 or maybe 2.8, but it must have solid AF on both the short end and long end.

The 180 is no 135L in terms of AF speed, but it's pretty quick for a screw motor AF, and much, much faster than the 80-200D (non AF-S) that I used to have (that thing had such torque kickback, yikes). I've used the 180 for nephews playing, some bird-on-branches, general stuff, and havn't had issue much with speed. AF accuracy is great every time too.

Anyway I find 180mm-200mm to be much more useful for me over a 135mm

I've tried it on two occasions and had the same impression both times. Don't get me wrong, it's sharp, but in my completely unscientific, real world use, the look and feel didn't excite me like the Canon version did. Sunstars are also a huge deal for me too, I point right at the sun every chance I get!

thx for your insight

the issue is that I don't want "pretty quick for a screw motor". I want quick AF, good quality. nikon needs to wake up. make a 135 f2 g ed $1200 or so. :P

I was even able to get good images in Mammoth Cave using my old, outdated D 300s with the old Nik 15-85mm VR lens.
