Had a fall photoshoot yesterday. Used my 58mm for nearly all the shots and was very happy with the outcome. Helps when the lighting is great, you have a photogenic family and a happy little boy! Sorry for the large post.

Nice set, but a lot of them have what appears to be "fake" or exaggerated narrow depth of field which I find very distracting and unnecessary.
Thanks. Nothing exaggerated or fake. This is how the 58mm renders. I guess maybe my processing of the colours exaggerates some of the effect but there is no manipulation going on to the depth of field or the background rendering. I for one love the effect but the 58mm has a love/hate relationship so I can see people not liking it.

Love the set man! You really nailed this one down pat. Since you have been working on skin tones, you could take it one step further and clean up the green/yellow color cast areas.. its not bad so it isn't really required on this set but for practice purposes I think you could pull it off.

thats the natural rendering of the 58 1.4 lens. at up close and medium distances, the lens renders a soft focus in the focal plane and a strong transition to the OOF areas. this is the specific character of the lens along with the ability to render points of light at night time as well. With your subjects at closer medium-infinity distances and a really far away back ground, you get the back ground rendering similar to that of the 200F2.. the back ground has to be REALLY far away to do it thus its pretty hard to pull it off.

Thanks! Really appreciate the comment Shawn. I have to do another calibration. My main monitor is out for repair so I might be working against that!

nice set, you really should retouch the dog's wigglys though-not a good look for a family photo.
FIXED! Thank you!

Nice set. 2 and 17 most appeal to me. my only nit is that #3 seems a bit soft
