What I really would like to know about this lens is how it compares to the Nikon 14-24, and especially at the minimum focusing distance while photographing small objects. I need a lens to show small reptiles and their habitat in the background. Being light is a plus since I'm backpacking into remote locations. The Nikon 24 1.8 focuses a couple inches closer than the zoom and it is lighter. But since I do not have one, I have no idea how it compares in image quality with the big zoom?
I am out traveling now, but when I get back home in a couple of days, I will see how the two compares. I am not a tester, so it won't be a systematic testing though.

Thank you very much !
I would want to shoot environmental shots with the background showing, so I shoot at higher f-stops. I need the ability to record lots of detail in small animals up very close.

Got it. Just so that I do not go opposite. When you say 'higher f-stop', you mean larger f-stop number ? Say, f8 - f16 not f 1.8 - 2.8 correct ?

Correct. larger. F8-16 to keep everything in focus.
At f16, difference is not that much apparent. Both are also suffering from some diffraction. Both shot at near minimum distance. 14-24 seems a bit longer, but it may be because of the lens barrel is longer, so actual distance may not be the same although it was shot from exact same 'tripod' location.
I know it is a bit hard in that size. Here are 100% crop. Interestingly, with the same exposure, 14-24 appears lighter, but that could be from ever changing natural light.
Image from a wedding I covered last night. Slight crop to fit for social media sites better. Really challenging venue to work in, but also very rewarding.
Yeay, finally someone else to post here ! keep them coming !!!
The venue looks certainly quite challenging with lots of wood. Great work, Everyone is lit very well and crisp and detailed.

I have been contemplating this lens, doesn't seem very popular. I was looking at the Sigma 20mm f1.4 but had read a review pointing me to the Nikon, sharper and sharper especially considering the discount on a refurb. I have always really liked my sigma's though.
It certainly feels 24/1.8g is sort of an unsung hero. I don't know why. It gets great reviews, and mostly positive user comments. I found finding shots taken with this lens on the web was harder than imagined. 28/1.8 shots were everywhere despite the much talked about shortcomings. I don't know the actual sales figure of 24/1.8g, so it is just a 'feeling'. Also, even within the Nikon lineup, there are multiple 24mm offerings( 1.4, PCE, 2.8 ) , so that might be another factor. I sort of wonder that It may be the magic combination of price point, alternative choices / competitors, timing, and even trend played against this lens.
For me I am enjoying this lens. Too early to say 'love', but close. I was looking for 24mm range AF lens, and light weight, performance, cost together led me to this lens.

I've been using this lens for almost 3 years. It is definitely a 'sleeper'. I will try and get better about posting to the thread! Keep up the great work.
I got the lens today and have to say with a few quick test shots I have to say so far I don't like the thing. Same with the 58 1.8g at least that one seems to focus. I will have to play around with it a bit more and see. If I had to pick between this and my old sigma DC 30mm 1.4 it would be the crop sigma. That may change? Whats the weirdst to me is these two lenses fail with auto white balance worse than my ancient tokina 12-24 and sigma 30
Do you feel the lens is functioning correctly ? Or, is it something else that you don't like ? I do feel the color rendition is a bit different from other modern Nikons I have such as 14-24 or 58/1.4g, 300/4 pf. It is just a feeling and not quite evident, when I see my own comparison at the top of page, I don't see much difference other than contrast. If you got a bad copy, that would be unfortunate.

Focus seems off now set at +20 the focal plane is not centered at close centered in the range. Outside if I focus say at trees off in the distance they never come into focus. Seems the focus worsens with distance.
