Thanks everyone. This guy was the only turtle that came close enough to me to photograph all weekend, and it's one I've never seen before. He popped his head up for maybe 30 seconds, and then was scarred away by a fisherman tromping by (stupid fisherman).

The good news is that fall is here in Japan, and it's the perfect weather to be out waiting for turtles to not show up.

Wonderful shot George! It is quite the coincidence that you posted this when you did. I had never seen one of these before and on the local Boston news just the other night, they showed a picture of one of these and the story along with it was about these turtles being found in some local pond. They are viewed as an invasive species right now and some marine biologists are worried that they could upset the local ecosystem (until they learn more about them). With this news story as my only knowledge of these turtles, I loved seeing the expression on this little guys face, because around here, I'd imagine they want to stay out of sight.

Good luck!

Jon

I'm pretty sure they aren't an invasive species out here, but I live quite a lot closer to China than to Boston. However, I guess they're nocturnal. During the day, usually you only see the much more common Japanese pond turtle. They come out and sun themselves, and you can see their heads out of the water as they swim around the pond.

I'm rather fond of turtles! Even sneaky ones.
