I love taking pics of adolescents! They're fun AND easy So as such, I'm working on branching on out and marketing High School Senior sessions. Would love any feedback anyone has to give me. Thanks for looking!

Why did you pose him in the feminine pose?
Yeah, I'm confused. None of these are feminine poses. Can you tell me specifically which one/s you're talking about?
He's either got his shoulders or his face squared off to the camera in all the pics except the street sign close up. He's casual in all of them. The hands in the pockets is a masculine pose. And his weight is generally evenly distributed, so as to not drop a hip, unless he's leaning against a wall or railing. And if he is leaning, he's holding a soccer ball or has his arms crossed. Can anyone else elaborate as to whether or not I've got some feminine poses going on here? Thanks!

Good idea, done! Here's the before for comparison...I changed it in the original post. Leethecam, do any of these poses look feminine to you
This split lighting with kickers on both side ads a shadow on the center of the face flattens the face (especially the shadows on both side of the nose.
If you move the kickers further back that it only hit the side of his jaw then the shadow wouldn't be as overpowering.

All the natural light shots are good... good job.

No kickers, just 1 strobe directly to his camera left and mom holding the reflector to his camera right, just out of the frame. I had her close to try and keep the shadowing down as much as possible but yeah, you're right in the fact that it provided split lighting. I should have had the strobe more at a 45 degree to him. I kinda wanted to go dramatic but not TOO shadowy. Wouldn't have lit a girl like this for sure. Suggestions on how to better light this with just an Einstein and a reflector Thanks!!!

Easiest way is to have your key 2 to 3 ft away from your left/right and feather the light away from your subject to get rid of those nasty hot spots.... and bounce to your taste.

I call this nicely done too. That said - No full body shots. And he's smack in the center of all photos, cept example 3.
Thanks Charles! But where's the love for the full body shot that is #7?
You're right that I center comp many of my pics. I tend to center comp my portrait orientations and place my subject off to the side on landscapes. Just seems to be what I gravitate towards. Now, with that being said...his head is not TRULY in the center on any of the pics, but rather intersecting with the top third cross section line . But I digress...not to argue and I see your critique I do need to be pushed to trying more creative comps. I added a ROT comp to the set, see #11 now. Thanks!!!

6&7 the lighting seems very flat compared to the others. Might not notice it if I didn't have the others to compare. Was there any added lighting on these shots?

loved this set. hes got an awesome personality and you can tell had a great rapport with him too. images are colorful, bright and cripsy. I dont mind the center comps much either, I do that as well..some of us just gravitate towards it if its our style.

Thanks, nextel, and ccugolf! Ccugolf, no extra lighting and I agree those are the most flat images. We were in open shade and the closest side wall was a good 20 feet away, so I didn't get as much directional lighting as I wanted from nature. I should have strobed those shots, but a dust storm (yes, we get those in the desert, lol) was barreling down on us and we wanted to grab a few quick shots in front of that wall before we had to run for cover. But I liked the poses and comps so I put them in the set. Thankfully they're not completely flat so somewhat usable still, I think. But agreed, more directional lighting would have improved the shots.
