Interesting! And EVF is off at that time also?
No, EVF is on when the proximity detector turns it on. Appears to be no light at all (not even any low level glow) when the EVF gets switched "off" by the eye detector.

It very well could be off. My post abo e was only for the a7/r and probably the s.
I seem to recall from my A7R days that when the monitor was off, it was just displaying "black", but you would still see a glow from the light leakage.
Even in a completely dark room I cannot see any light from the rear monitor of the A7RII when it's either switched to the EVF or it's set to off in the menu.

With the A7II, I get the impression that the IBIS is not always on, but only when you half press the shutter. But I may be wrong.
Right, <slaps forehead>, what I -meant- to say was:
Some folks have pre-focus set to "on". The combination of this setting, while walking round with lens cap off, camera on, will eat up a battery in a hurry.

Intersting. Thanks for sharing. And thanks to the OP for the tip too.

Also, though it's much harder to see effectively, but when the EVF is "off" I cannot see any glow in the viewfinder either - so it likely is truly powered off.
Again, it could be that the display driver electronics are still fully sucking power and just the physical display is de-powered, but this would be silly if they did that unless those display electronics need to be fully powered and sending signals in order to quickly have the display turn back on (which is does indeed do very quickly).
Having an A7II i was excited to read this tip, but not due to the energy saving thing. I cannot use my lcd flipped as it turns off most of the times switching for the viewfinder . But unfortunately there is no such custom key settings option in this camera.
The "manual" switching is most useful for making sure the LCD doesn't go dark when I'm using the LCD like a waist level view finder. I like doing this, but the sensor kept switching to the EVF which is a pain. the manual switching solves the problem. If it improves battery life so much the better.
But, like Guy I have a bunch and they do need to be used and recharged.
Really good information about the Wi-Fi but the rest is about the A7 not the A7r2 which has an additional function to turn off the monitor and not just deactivate it. Hope the updates the book and does tests on the A7r2. I also hope that Sony will comment on this feature.
? Saw this thread. Got my a7r ii a couple of days ago. Camera comes with no custom function assigned to the bottom position of the wheel on the back of the camera. Assigned function MONITOR/VIEWFINDER to the down/bottom position. It turns off/on the monitor. Viewfinder is only on when looking through the viewfinder. Tada.....as an aside, was out shooting hummers this morning and found that my Canon 600mm version 1 works fine in autofocus. Some had said it did not for them.
Just found another advantage to assigning the MONITOR/VIEWFINDER to a button on the A7Rll. When shooting tethered to capture one in the studio live view works really well so there's no need to have either the monitor or the viewfinder on, which means no power for either will be used when shooting tethered. If you want to take a look at the set through the camera all you have to do put your eye up to the viewfinder which activates it. Major plus for the A7rll and studio shooting. When I first was setting up I was having problems with the USB transfer with a long cable to the other side of the studio so I bought a Cable MattersŪ SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Type A Male to Female Active Extension Cable 5 Meters/16.4 Feet from Amazon which works extremely fast with USB 2. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DMFB5OK?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

Yes, when trying to use longer USB cables, cable quality matters . . . .
I have yet to try it tethered - I want to tether to my Android tablet, which I also use with my D800 when on the tripod. Has anyone tethered to the A7RII with an Android tablet - I would use it just for control, not for transferring the images to the tablet.
You can only transfer JPG's to a phone or tablet the RAW's are stored on the card.. No lag time to the shutter release and you can touch focus with FE lenses on the tablet screen.
Does anyone know of a decent solution for the original a7 / a7r
We do not have the "Finder/Monitor" option within the custom key settings. I would love to manually pop back and forth between the viewfinder and monitor, or even between "auto" and "off".
I have an A7r2 and am using this function with the C1 button. I wanted to do this with my A7R as well but even with the latest 2.0 update, it doesn't seem to have the 'Finder/Monitor Sel' options under the Custom options. Any suggestions or is this just not possible with the A7R?
