I have a 7d2 for action - that's what I shoot wildlife with. I just need something for when I want to take portraits of family or friends... sounds like the a7rII would be plenty good!
It does fine in dark conditions. I was photographing some mortars (indigenous peoples of the Southwest) after the sun went down and was able to focus on anything I needed to. It was fast and efficient.
Just picked up the Canon 16-35/4 and the $100 Fotodiox Pro adapter, been walking around my building shooting all kinds of things - AF is very snappy, feels like a native lens. UWA's aren't as challenging as some, but the results are very good. Now I just have to figure out what other FL's I can live without eye AF to make up for the lack of lower cost FE lenses.
Has anyone tested the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 on the A7II (with new update) or the A6000? Or even the A7RII which may now have similar results to the A7II after FW
Are there any consequences to choosing PDAF focusing with the new firmware? I realize (I think) it's needed to get the most out of Canon lenses with Metabones, but does it either add to or take away from the focus ability with native lenses such as the Batis 25? Should I be using the standard focus mode with native lenses?
Today I was testing the Metabones IV T with my new A7RII and the Canon 24-70 f/2.8LII. It nailed autofocus consistently and quickly in good light. I could get slightly better manual focusing in a few instances, and manual focus is very easy with this lens. Overall I'm happy with the Metabones, and edge to edge focus seems consistent.
With native lens the AF system selection is greyed out. You cannot choose between PDAF and CDAF because the camera always uses both, whereas with a non-native lens you may choose either but not both.

Thanks much. After updating firmware, I guess I had only looked at that menu with a non-native lens attached. Makes sense.

My recent experiences with the 50L and 85L II on A7rII with the MB IV v.47 are superb. I now prefer the rendering and look I get with these two lenses on the A7rII compared to my M240 and 50 Nocti f/1.0 and 75 Lux.
With the 50 Nocti f/1.0 and 75 Lux, focus accuracy was always an issue on the M9/M240, but having accurate AF on the A7rII has dramatically changed my thinking.
Jason Lanier has just posted a video on his experiences with the A7rII and 50L with the MB IV. This was the supposed secret lens that Sony Rumors thought might be new FE released lens.
He has never used Canon, but he also loves the 50L. I thought this might be of interest to those looking for lens similar to the 50 Noct f/1.0 without the price tag

I tried a few more lenses on my A7rII w/ Viltrox II, and one with a Commlite. I really can't stomach the thought of a $400 adapter that is still a kluge (for instance, the shorter primes I like to use, like a 100mm f/2 goes from perfectly balanced/sized to oddly balanced and long when you stick it on the end of a 1" AF adapter).
Importantly, these were tested only for a few shots inside a store w/ not so bright fluorescent light, with a large front window but during dusk. In other words, pretty dark. I could not verify the age of some of the lenses.
135mm f/2.8 Soft Focus-- No AF. Wouldn't even hunt.
70-200 f/4L (non-IS)-- Dismal performance. Locked about 1/10 tries, only on extreme contrast areas (usually failing even on those targets). Better at 70mm (1/3 locked) and worse at 200mm (1/15).
100mm f/2 (brand new from box) -- Hunted, but wouldn't lock. I also tried a commlite with the same result. This was really unfortunate because I'd be hoping to buy this for a coming trip.
100-400L IS (v1) -- Worked decently well. Nothing for tracking, or fast-fast work (bif are out of the question). But for say, large mammals on Safari-- good enough. I plan on picking one up for just this purpose in the spring.
I'd hoped for better, since the Viltrox II worked so damn well with my pre-2006 35mm f/1.4L. I mean, it was just about as fast (sometimes faster) than on my 5D2... and definitely more accurate.
I would definitely consider another $50-100 AF adapter, updated for the A7rII to match the MB IV-T performance with some of these lenses.

I tend to agree it is not fun putting out 400 dollars which I did again two months ago. Right now it's only for one lens too the 135 F2 which works really nice. Although that 50 1.2 might be fun . Also though nice to have the ability to rent a Canon lens when needed and already having the adapter.

Hi. Can you confirm that what you are saying is that the 135 f2L does AF well with the MB IV - am I reading this right? Thanks.
p.29 #15 · A7RII and Canon lenses AF compatibility
Confirmed the 135 and version.47 on the metabones is very fast but more important very accurate. This really is a nice combo. This actually does not bother me with adapter because it works very well. Really I got a little over 1k in it which is pretty good and the ability to use other canon mount glass with it. So until Sony or Zeiss get us a native 135 this is a very nice combo .
Just have to get over the cost of the Metabones which is high but it is very versatile

One other important factor. As a Pro or even a hobbyist with special needs . Canon has many more lens options that you can rent for a special shoot some hard to get lenses or very expensive lenses you don't want to buy. So even though we may moan about adapters they do give us a lot of options out there too.

Thanks Charles and Guy. I impulse bought a mint used MB IV for $300 today and am a little worried - all I want is usable AF with the 135 f2L for stage shots/events. I'll check and/or update the FW upon arrival and report back. Thanks again.

Paul it should work just fine for stage and such. A lot of my use as well. Do check firmware and update..
You can even check the version on your Sony body. It should show that data. Look for I think it's a firmware menu on your Sony it should show body and adapter there.

Looking for a smaller 70-200 and have the Metabones adapter. Haven't been excited about the 70-200 FE Sony. Anyone have any luck with the Canon 70-200 f/4 IS on the newest Metabones adapter firmware?
p.29 #20 · A7RII and Canon lenses AF compatibility
I still haven't seen confirmation that Canon 2.8/200L (II), 4/300IS and 100-400IS II (at the long end) work well with A7R2 and Metabones IV with latest firmware, or maybe one of the alternative adapters. But maybe I missed something? None of the Sony alternatives are attractive to me ...
I guess that as the 2/135 works fine the 2.8/200L works as well because it is similar generation.
