Hello.
I bought a 200-500 about three weeks ago, for aviation, shipping and birds. So far I've had no real opportunities to get out and use it, thanks to endless rubbish weather, although initial results from indoors (pets, fixtures and fitting and Christmas baubles!) are promising. It's not at all bad at f/5.6, but better at f/6.3 and f/7.1 and better still at f/8. I've not tried it at smaller apertures yet. I'm using it on my D750 (I also have a D800 but haven't tried it on that so far).
I'm not 100% sure I'm keeping it though, due to the weight (I've got elbow problems) and am considering changing it for the 80-400G.

Thanks a lot! I just traded mine towards a 500 f4 VR but I'll repurchase as soon as I pay off the new glass...
it's that good. Really impressed with the zoom on FX. GL, hope your weather turns for the better...soon!

Congratulations on the prime, I've always wanted a large prime but the cost puts me off (not that I can afford it anyway!).
Yeah, December in England...our nice sunny-but-frosty winter weather has been replaced by mild temperatures and storms. Rain is hammering against the window as I type.
Back on topic (before someone tells me off!), I am looking forward to trying the 200-500 properly!

It should be noted, Birdie went home with the 200-500. If that's not an endorsement...
I don't know what is. BTW, that gal can shoot!
Thanks so much Will for the very kind words
Here are a couple more with the 200-500, wide open , handheld. I'm quite happy with the autofocus and detail this lens produces.

Impressive images posted by everyone. And now for something a little different with results quite obvious.
Last week I photographed The Nutcracker in Honolulu from the back of the theatre. Normally I shoot with a couple of Nikon D810s and two of the following lenses: Nikon 70-200mm f2.8, 200-400mm f4 or an older 400 f2.8 AF-I. This year I decided to test out the 200-500mm f5.6 lens. Why? Primarily for more flexibility and the ability to get tighter shots of the performing youngsters. I knew I was taking a chance but I was counting on the improved low light capability of modern DSLRs to help.
Below are a few photos at f5.6 with iso ranging from 3200 and 6400. Although the images look pretty good, in my opinion there is too much detail loss when compared to the faster 200-400 or the 400 prime. In other words - and let me state the obvious - a loss of one or two stops in poor light causes much more image degradation than in good light. I will continue to use the 200-500mm during the day, but can't imagine I will use it at another theatrical performance.
A couple of notes: firstly, I admit I have high IQ expectations when it comes to ballet and secondly, I missed focus on the last shot, but it still looks OK because of the greater DOF.

Birdie
yesterday, I purchased my 200-500 and I’m very, very happy.
but, when I see your pictures, I say to myself that I must work very much to be able to produce such great images.
Fabien.
