Wow! That looks sharp. Would love to hear your comparison to the Sigma 150-600 Sport.
Thanks! I'm workin' on it, Jimtay Love the range and push/pull of da Sport
but this Nikon offering is sharper at 500 and does f5.6 with adequate AF'ing.
Will work 'em both on FX then after the weekend will give the D7200 a turn.

Got my 200-500mm late yesterday. I'm impressed with the build and it seems to AF just a little faster than the Tamron and the VR seems to work a tad bit better too. Looks to be pretty sharp and has great colors/contrast. But that could all be in my head to justify the purchase! lol

I got a chance to snap a few today at lunch.
I watched a video of a guy comparing those 2 and the Nikon looked slower to focus. The Tamron looked equally slow at 600mm to the Nikons 500mm but when he compared them at equal FL, the Tamron looked like the clear winner.

I sold the Tamron before I had a chance to use both side by side. Like I said in my initial post on this thread I'm not expecting miracles with this lens. All of your choices in this price range are going to be close in IQ with each other and preferences in weight, AF, build, cost, etc will play a role in ones choice.
Weather permitted I will be at a local eagles nest with a few other amateur photographers tomorrow. With a little luck and hopefully some sun light I'll be able to post some comparisons with images from the Tamron taken from the same location. I have thousands of photos to compare with and a couple of my friends have the Sigma 150-600 sport. I may be able to get them to switch out lens so we can get a direct comparison between it and the Nikon 200-500. Same goes with a couple of folks shooting with the 500 f4, but they may not want to share! lol
PS was the video part of a review? I'd like to see it if possible.

I tried looking for it and could not find it. I looked in my history, but did not see it there either. I can't remember if it was an actual youtube video or just a general google search linking to some other video service.

just wondering how the focus speed compares to the competition? if it is up to par and there is little or no focus breathing i could consider it. although the made in china stigma does bother me.

The 105VR is made in China and remains one of the best macro lenses available. The entire range of outstanding 1.8G primes are made in China. The D810 is made in Thailand. The only 200-500 reviews so far have been glowing. Made in Japan lenses & bodies still have issues. You don't need to worry about where it's made these days.
Consensus on focus speed seems to be a step below the "pro" lenses, as one would expect. Plenty fast for air shows, standard BIF, etc. but not as fast as the 80-400G or the exotics of course. It has an AF limiter too to speed things up. Slightly slower than the Sigma 150-600 Sport. Faster than Tamron 150-600.
