So went to the nest yesterday after it stopped raining. Sun was out. That lasted about 20mins before I got pelted with some serious hail and drenched to the bone. The 7D2 and 200-400 stayed out and performed throughout the deluge.
Here are a few shots during and after the storm. Great lighting after the sun came out behind me.
These are stunning captures! Very nicely photographed as well. I think the best ones are when the eagle is shaking off. Indeed great lighting, and very sharp, however, they obviously go well as a series.
Great captures Geoff, the last one is particularly good. Too bad there wasn't another photographer in the area shooting your position at the same time; would be interesting to see who faired better during the deluge!

Absolutely stunning! The vibrance of colours, the shutter speed set to show the rain, the sharpness and whole mood of the subjects, your angle of view it's all stunning.
This is a view of an eagle's nest that I think it is safe to say has probably never been posted before. What a unique experience!!! Number 3 is my favorite. All of these are great shots. How long will the chicks stay in the nest once they are fledged?

2 years ago this same family was at a nest across the road and had a webcam on it. That year they fledged early August and I have pictures of them around the area and back at the nest into late September, maybe even October.
This year eggs were earlier so I suspect fledge will be 3rd or 4th week of July. They will likely be around at the nest looking for food from parents throughout August and not sure how long after that. Most of the fledglings around our area (there are lots of nests around) end up at the dump for easy pickings before they might migrate to SE Alaska or BC for the famous late salmon runs. Some eagles aren't migrating from here anymore. One of the parents of this nest was seen around the area all winter the last two years.

Thanks Morris, I climbed up to the top of the embankment and went under a tree during the hail. Then I snuck out a few times to snap some of the stormy shots.

Two others photographing left just before the hail came. However, I believe they were there for the earlier rainstorm that I waited out at home before heading to the nest. I was the only one out their in the hail. It was fun
Beautiful set. Great composition. Wonderful behavioral timing. You really nailed the exposures--not easy with that range from bright whites to blacks.
