p.2 #1 · Does Lightroom 6 standalone version require an Adobe ID?

This is a tread about if an Adobe ID is required to use Lightroom 6. I answered that question. I was asked a second question about Lightroom 6 connecting to the Internet (versus Lightroom 5). I answered that and documented it with screenshots.

I clearly stated above that "However, even though I opted out the first day I installed Lightroom 6 it is still connecting to the Internet continuously while I'm using it." So there is no FUD here. I even posted screenshots above showing how to opt out using the Adobe web site. I also made it clear that

I find what you have discovered extremely interesting and worrying, this is Adobe taking a Big Brother approach under the guise of the software still being 'standalone' and it patently isn't.

I am currently considering whether to continue with LR6 or not, it's clearly better than 5.7 in several ways but I object most strongly to this intrusion, especially as it is so covert.

And most of it seems to be coming from you. Have you even read the posts?

In the "Photoshop Insider Training" tutorial produced by Lynda.com for Photoshop CS6; Photoshop's Product Manager Bryan O'Neil Hughes said that Adobe implemented a voluntary, "opt-in" program in CS5 called Headlights that enables Adobe to see how users use the tools in Photoshop, and how frequently they are used.

Except with LR6, the "opt-in" is NOT voluntary. It is the default option.

So this information that Adobe collects user info has been known for at least 5 years when Photoshop CS5 was released and now the Headlights program has been extended to Lightroom 6. It is also voluntary so you don't have to participate if you don't want to. But if you're the kind of user that click the "OK" button before reading then you might have ok'd the monitoring without noticing. When you start Lightroom 6 for the first time there's a huge notice that say's that monitoring is turned on by default and gives instructions on how to turn it off.

I have installed LR6 on 2 computers. Adobe did NOT give me the option to install the program with the usage reporting features disabled on either. Moreover, even when I have opted out of the data reporting feature using my user preferences in my Adobe account page, LR6 still continues to call home. I suggest you do your homework before posting FUD yourself.

On one hand, Adobe could be invading your personal life and tracking your every move and selling the data about you to someone.

On the other hand, they might be doing what lots of other companies do, namely tracking usage patterns for technical reasons as described by an earlier post.

There is a difference.

Why not just disconnect your computer from the internet when using LR6?

Wouldn't that solve the problem?

Because it won't work after a while, unless LR6 phones home every so often it will stop working

That would probably work for some folks. I multitask and I run several virtual machines on my desktop and need to do tasks on those machines episodically which involves connecting to the internet. I run LR6 on the bare-metal host for the graphics speed. I guess I could put all the VMs on a dedicated Ethernet port and disconnect the host. I could also run the VMs on a dedicated host like I used to but I've been consolidating physical boxes to save on power consumption.

Windows security is getting to be more and more of a pain as applications like Lightroom 6 take on a life of their own. I'm glad Capture One and DXO don't do the same thing. It gives me and out if I get fed up with Lightroom 6.

All of the examples so far show Windows machines and Lr phoning home. The situation is the same on the Mac side. Via "Little Snitch" which provides a pop up anytime a program is contacted or tries to phone out, I can verify that EVERY Adobe app phones home when opening (sometimes to two different sites) and again depending on the program will demand acceptance or won't open.

All of my Adobe ID settings are set to not send or give any information to the company. Obviously this is ignored. I'm still using 5.7 and I have to allow it to connect to the Lr server AND the Ps server. (Incidentally Adobe is hardly alone in this.)

Yes, you have to register with Adobe for the "privilege"of paying the rent on their products. I've not tried to analyze the out going/incoming requests, but they do represent quite small data packets.

And for a bit of light hearted relief, I was in the middle of culling 800 BS pix for a deadline when Lr tossed up the message "You are using version 5.7.1. There is a upgrade available." I was in a bit of a fey mood (too much coffee, so little sleep thus I clicked the link and sure enough I was at the new Lr 6.0 buy page. However the only option available was the amazing $10 @ month that included PS CC. No amount of wiggling or fanigling provided any other option.

Now I know there are ways around the CC uber alls shield to get an actual stand alone upgrade, but I can see some less informed user simply agreeing to the upgrade and finding themselves paying $10 for ever (that is if they wish to retain any work done on a pix in Lr). "Where'd this $10 charge on my credit card come from?"

Folks, Adobe already has a pipeline into your computer (so do Apple and Microsoft and others). I don't know what that means over the long term, but I have the strong feeling that the more an external agency knows about me, the more ominous it appears. It's not like I'm doing something illegal or even all that interesting. It's the now apparently archaic concept of "privacy" being one of the fundamental components enunciated by the writers of the US Constitution "… among these are the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

Robert

(I think a lot of people waste way too much time worrying about what the "government" knows about you and not near enough about what the mega-corps know.)

I agree with most of that, except no Adobe product I have on my pc apart from LR6 won't work without an internet connection.

Written by a highly informed individual. I could not have expressed it better myself.

Its all good until some bureaucrat decides its time "to make strict and diligent search for ... the author, or one concerned in the writing of several weekly very seditious papers." It has happened before. It will happen again. Which is why John Adams added to the Massachusetts Constitution: "Every subject has a right to be secure from all unreasonable searches, and seizures of his person, his houses, his papers." And we need to take this paradigm into the 21st century. But out of respect to the management of this fine forum I'll try to keep politics off of this board. But will happily discuss it over breakfast sometime in person

If you have the stand-alone version, it should continue to work without an internet connection.
I have a stand-alone LR6 and deliberately disconnect from the internet just to see what happens.
So far, after using LR6 for about 3 weeks, it has worked every time...no problem.

when i installed cs6, my firewall prompted me whether to allow or disallow (cs6) outbound & inbound communications. i reluctantly allowed access to facilitate access to any released adobe updates.

so, if i removed internet connection to my computer while using cs6, will the computer slow down b/c of repeating unsuccessful attempts from cs6 to communicate with adobe servers?

Thanks for that information, I do not need PS, use Picture Window Pro and Nik for what LR cannot do. Do not want to put my cents to CC!

No CS6 and Lightroom 5.x work 100% fine without an internet connection. CS6 and Lightroom 5.x do not phone home. In my opinion that's the way all software should work. The only reason you should be required to connect to the internet is if you wanted to download an update.

For a while it will work. But it needs to phone home occasionally to Adobe via the Internet or it will deactivate. I've had it deactivate twice and I have the stand-alone version.

Phoning home is not good. I had audio plugins for a digital audio workstation featuring this bug. On day the server was shut down, end of story.
I do not want to support a comppany, that can disapear and take away my tools and the work I have done to learn to use the product. Not again.

I had that happen to me too with software I was using when a company folded.

The thing to do is to write a specific letter to the Federal Trade Comm'n. Ask them to open a file on this matter. Send copies to your legislators. Nothing will change without pushback from a fairly large number of people.

This is why a lot of people with CC subs use the amtlib crack and then block the app from talking to the internet, it's kind of shady since they aren't very up front about what they are doing. Contrast this with say, the Windows 8/8.1 install. It gives you extremely clear options about if you want to participate in things.

The other problem is that adobe has an extremely poor security track record. I know this really just related to flash, but people associate them with each other.

On the other hand, the $10/month for photoshop, lightroom is an extremely fair deal. So really I think the issue is more a matter of communication and people having a dim view of adobe (I'm not saying this view is justified mind you).
