This photo was taken at Artist's Palette Death Valley.
I parked the car about a third of the way to the Artist's Palette parking viewpoint and took a hike to this location. There were some downhills and steep hills to get there so for those who want to try it, I recommend bringing a flashlight and compass just in case you get a little lost in the dark.

Taken with A7R + Canon 24-70 f/2.8L II with no filters (3-shot HDR)
I hope you like it.
Best,
Fred

This is a tough area to photograph and this is the best I have seen of this location. Beautiful work!

How rare to have a somewhat dramatic sky be outdone by more colorful rocks! Very nice!

My only minor criticism (and I'll plead the familiar "my monitor has not been calibrated in a while") is the very small cluster of clouds near the top left corner, almost a third of the way down, that seem unnaturally dark...but still a beautiful image.

Very nice Fred. Love the sky and the light...reminds me of the Valley of Mordor.

Nice imaging of a challenging scene of a great location. Every time I drive that loop, it is hard to find comps, although my eyes are certainly enjoying the place.

I like the strong colors you were able to gather and keep the focus on the palette instead of having the eye wander around towards the fantastic clouds.

Everything about this shot is really nice but that sky makes it!
Great capture!

HDR at its best - looks like the eye would render it, very nicely done. I was there in exactly the wrong light and location (face on and middle of day) - so I could see the potential but not capture it, as you have so nicely done. Great shot!

Thanks! Every time I take the Artist Drive loop, I never find a good spot with good light. This is a good location and I intend to come back for sunrise next time I'm there.
Best,
Fred

I have not tried sunrise, but I spent two afternoons and evenings at that location. I never got anything I was happy with. Your image not only captures the colors but the sense of place. I love the fact that you captured the salt flats and the setting sun.

I had an interesting afternoon at the parking lot for artists palette. I started to time the visitors. Almost every car stopped and left within 2 minutes. Anything more than 2 minutes, meant an outhouse visit. In two afternoons and evenings I only saw one other photographer. Of course, they stayed to study and work the scene.

Good job! Getting away from the 'standard' viewpoints and exploring the endless terrain is one of DV's greatest rewards.

I have never even heard of this location, so thank you for sharing it with us...what a cool landscape that is.

Thanks for the feedback Jon. It was not from post-processing though. which brings an interesting dilemma. Sometimes clouds do look unnatural. Should we edit it to make it look more natural?

Thanks Ben. I'm glad you liked it. I tried a couple focal lengths and settled with 35mm for this shot.

This location along with Devil's Golf Course intrigues me. I was never able to capture them the way I wanted. The good news is that it forces me to keep trying!

Perhaps because of the sky and low key look. Thanks for the feedback.

Same here Jeffrey. I always go to the loop and enjoy the view tremendously. Thanks!

Hi Fred. If this is what Mother Nature presented (i.e. not from post-processing, which I thought it might have been), I'd say you leave it as is!
