Thanks for the pics Guy!
Way to early for any meaningful conclusions, but looks to me very much
like the Zeiss ZE/ZF 85 f1.4, similar bokeh unfortunately and unfortunately similar C/M aberrations...
Zeiss colors and contrast, but way too much CA to me. I wouldn't trade my Leica 90 APO.

I'll try and get some more shooting in and look for some CA stuff too. Maybe try another distortion shot or two. Bummed a little hear stock is a limited. I do want that 25 in a week or two. Hopefully B&H sends a least there first wave of pre orders out.

I read in dcwatch.jp that the official release date for Japan is August. That matches to the B&H date which might be the next big batch after the first release copies...
Cosina is releasing VM 35mm 1.7 in August and also pushed ZM 35mm 1.4 Japanese date to August 15. It looks like they are at full capacity production...

Guy - Some really nice samples. I'm sure you'll all do good things with the Batis lineup.
I turned my dealer down yesterday or the day before. My days blend together. Since you asked, I'm pretty sure someone else has the lenses I turned down.
I feel I'm seeing the same qualities in that Batis lenses that I don't like in the FE Zeiss lineup. Perhaps you'll all change my mind. So hurry up and post those images
I don't understand why Zeiss has moved away from the look I love, and why they've adopted this Sigma Art lens / Sony Alpha/FE look. Plastic bokeh, and unappealing colors. Though again, the Sony sensors do play a roll in the colors.
Am I just to use to Leica?
I recently picked up a 2xD750 (35/85/400).. I actually only bought the Nikon kit because I needed to do a project with the 400mm lens. Once over, I was going to sell, as mentioned I'm not a fan of Sony sensors, and the D750 is no exception. HOWEVER, I think the 35/1.8 and the 85/1.8 hit a few of the mental boxes for lens rendering that I don't mind having in quick AF option (years ago I owned the 35/1.4 and 85/1.4 and liked them). So I might just keep the D750 cameras and the two lenses, when the project is over. And just get rid of the tele. Let's face it, the D750 still focuses faster then my S-system, and is smaller and lighter.. So I'm sure they'll earn their keep.
This is kinda unfortunate news for me. I was holding onto my two A7II cameras, because I thought I was going to add the Batis 25/2 and 85/1.8 to my lineup. Ergonomics of the body aside, I really felt happy Zeiss was doing these Batis lenses.. They even look COOL! And initially I thought they'd get it right (admittedly the 25/2 is slightly more favourable then the 85/1.8) but since I have the Q, I really don't feel a need to own JUST the 25/2 (I was more looking for a complete package).

It looks like more reviews are showing up: http://3d-kraft.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=176:zeiss-batis-25-85-rolling-review&catid=40:camerasandlenses&Itemid=2 Conclusion
Both lenses seem to deliver the promise that they already gave at the first quick look, described in my earlier article. The Batis 1.8/85 may not have the level of perfection like an Otus 1.4/85 and relies in some situations a bit more on lens correction profiles provided by camera firmware and/or raw processors. The distortion (other sites measured 3%) is negligible as long as you use it for portrait or "nature" work. If you use it for architecture (not the main application for a telephoto application) it can be easily corrected taking into account the enormous resolution and processing speed of today's cameras. This well balanced compromise allows to provide a professional grade lens in a compact and lightweight form factor including autofocus and optical stabilization with a reasonable price tag. For me, the f/1.8 aperture at 85mm fits perfectly well as it gives a good balance with A7 series bodies and provides enough DOF options for almost any situation in practical use cases. Due to it's stabilization it will be also an intresting option for videos with the A7S.
The Batis 2/25 surprised me with extraordinary sharpness across the whole frame right from open aperture in a compact, lightweight housing. At f/2.0 you may have to correct some vignetting and some chromatic aberration (CA) but these almost disappear already when you stop down one step to f/2.8. Thanks to its wide aperture and short close focus, it provides additional options to play with depth of field and shows a pleasing bokeh not available when using wide angle zoom lenses.

Some more quick shots. A lot of these are part of a AFC tracking and different settings just trying to get a feel on what it can do. Nothing artistic here just want to see how things are looking. Ill post the raws too for this series so you folks can play as well.

Im pretty darn happy with it so far. Needed a 85mm real bad this seems to be the ticket.
My gut feeling this is a cross between the 55 1.8 and the Zeiss ZA 85 1.4 in look. But much sharper wide open than the 85 1.4 and Im not seeing to much CA. I need to be looking for it but nothing glaring yet

So where did you get yours from that you got it already. I pre-ordered mine the first day but haven't heard anything.

Thanks for the raw images GM! It looks incredibly sharp, much more so than the FE 35mm 1.4. Seems it is *fairly* well controlled in terms of fringing from what i'm seeing too, which is something my FE 35mm 1.4 doesn't do well wide open.
I've always been a 35/85 shooter so I'm tempted to get this to replace my 55mm 1.8 (as much as I love everything about the 55, i've never been a huge 50mm fan).
