You sure it doesn't use D encoding? I get a distance number in feet for my D lenses when I MF.
What I meant was there's no distance encoding information on the focusing barrel itself, just a rotation sensor on the focus motor itself, which should be a lot more accurate (it's easier to count entire rotations of the motor than to try and sense the position of the focus helicoid).

+1. Absolutely - so far I found the the look and the build of the Sony FE lenses less than appealing to me ("plastic-fantastic"). Has nothing to do with the optical performance, just my impression from handling some of the lens bodies.

The good thing is that if this is coming in at $1200, the rumored Sony 85/1.8 or 85/2 or whatever it will be should come in significantly less. Maybe in the $800 range. That would be a great thing.

It is nice to be a dreamer...this will put pressure on Sony to not over price.

Looks like the Otus - which is Nikon/Canon mount
They were all under the same design house. Zeiss mentioned about this when the Otus 55 first came out. To me, it doesn't exude the same build quality feel of the old Contax Zeiss or the modern Leica M.

Am I the only one who thinks that this is the 85mm f/1.8 FE lens? At least the only one we'll be seeing in a while? So far it looks like Sony and Zeiss are splitting the duties nicely in order not to compete too much with each other and not to skew the overall range of available lenses towards one point.
Apart from the Loxias (which are MF and therefore a niche product) the assortment is pretty linear. It was the same with Olympus and Panasonic within the MFT alliance until pretty recently: apart from basic zooms, they have not been making lenses with highly similar specs (it's not so anymore).

Someone please remind me how Leica will not go out of business one day? I feel like this only strengthens the case for Sony and Zeiss eating into their sales.

Why is there still Rolex? The potentates and wannabes of the world will always like to show off their wealth.

Admittedly the FE system is becoming more attractive but Sony is still missing the point in their body design. This could change however. It only suffices for them to release just one body with the right ergonomics and they will score big time. For the first time ever, the weakness is not in the lenses, since the line up is impressive, but the bodies suck imho.
PS. Before someone asks me what would be a good body design, I would say something along the lines of the Fuji xt1 or x pro1 or even the nex7.

The Canon 85/1.8 EF lens has a filter thread of 58 mm...and is of course a DSLR lens. So I wouldn't consider 67 mm filter diameter size small.
The Canon 85/1.8 is an $350 lens I really liked mine. It was excellent optically except for the rare blue/purple fringing. It was sharp from wide open on my 22MP 5DII.Cheaper, lighter, smaller...fast focusing. That and the 100/2 are real bargains.

I'm definitely tempted by the 85 mm. I've got the FE 28mm f/2 still on pre-order, so I'll likely hold off on the 25 mm for a while. Great to see Zeiss producing these lenses.
Did anyone post the MFD for the 85 mm lens? - that's been the one drawback of most full frame 85/100 mm lenses for me. MFD is usually much better with the Fuji X lenses or Olympus micro 4/3. It's just nice to have a 85/100 mm lens that can do portraits as well as a close-up flower shot.

Well MFD and actual magnification (i.e. how large the subject is relatively to the frame) is two different things. The Fuji and Olympus might have shorter MFD, but the magnification might be the same or worse than lenses on FF.

If you are satisfied with cheap consumer grade lenses, then these Zeiss lenses probably aren't for you.

True.
Its just nice to be able to take a shot like this with a 85/100mm lens in addition to portraits. Most FF 85/100mm non-macro lenses can't take a shot like this without significant cropping.....

They are probably being made by Fuji, just like the Zeiss Touits...
