Rob I think he means, why are they BIGGER? To which the answer would be, because of the stretching of the panorama. It almost looks like a tilt-shift effect was used to blur the stars. This is an effect that I am usually not a fan of when creating panoramas that involve stars, and something I try to combat / avoid. But since the Milky way went that high up into the sky, I suspect it was un-avoidable.
